A Popup Interview with Akehurst
[ Artist Website ] | [ Buy Our CD ]
CK: Do you feel that "underground" is just a marketing term like anything else?
Akehurst: no, we think underground music are bands that haven't been heard of that much. they could be extremely talented and could not be. its the fact that not much people have heard of them before makes them underground
CK: Do you have a street or e-team system in place? Want one for your website?
Akehurst: no, we don't. but we're organising one at the moment
CK: How experienced are you or the band on the stage?
Akehurst: well we've been playing around southern england for 2 years now
CK: Where do you practice as a band and how often?
Akehurst: we practise once or twice a week at either someones house or a local school
CK: Are there any established artists with whom you would like to collaborate?
Akehurst: yeah loads of bands. we were going to be playing with an ex victory records band called somehow hollow. but the stupid promoter dropped us for some other band
CK: How did you/all learn to play, self or school?
Akehurst: well i had lessons with a guitar teacher and ben had lessons with his drum teacher and mark and ben learnt bass and guitar by themselves
CK: What genre(s) would you say your music is under?
Akehurst: Melodic Hardcore
CK: Do you do any recording on your own?
Akehurst: yes, our bassist mark, is doing a course in college at the moment to do with recording
CK: What is your favorite local venue?
Akehurst: umm... probably concorde 2 in brighton
CK: If you could put on a show anywhere were would it be?
Akehurst: probably somewhere in the U.S of A
CK: Are you looking to get a record deal? Why?
Akehurst: yeah we're currently recording a 4 track demo. so when that's finished we'll be sending it off to lots of places
CK: What makes you and your band unique?
Akehurst: dunno really.. probably are style of music. its not like anyone else. its like a mix of grade and somehow hollow
CK: Have you ever paid for advertising for the band?
Akehurst: yeah, we've got t-shirts out and also badges. and once a month or so we organise a show at our local venue, which cost a bit but the money we get back makes a big profit
CK: What are your plans for the future with your band?
Akehurst: to get signed and have regularly tour round england and hopefully america
CK: Tell us about your worst gig and why it was so bad.
Akehurst: haha that was probably our third gig or something like that. we played in front of a crowd of like 200 people and all of them hated our style of music. i mean everyone appreciated how we can play as a band, but they just hated out style.
CK: So, tell me..what exactly, motivates you, the artist to write songs?
Akehurst: many bands such as grade and somehow hollow have motivated us a lot and also simply enough, life experiences, has played a lot towards it.
CK: If you could talk to anyone in the music business, who would it be?
Akehurst: probably a producer from a major record company or something like that so we could see if we could arrange a record deal and if they say no we could ask him/her how we could improve
CK: Give us a run down of your audio equipment:
Akehurst: joe carter (rhythm guitar, leads vox) -epiphone les paul studio
ryan gorringe (lead guitar) - epiphone g400
mark hoeppner (bass) - cant remember lol
ben mead (drums) various cymbols etc..
CK: How do you transport your equipment to the gig?
Akehurst: train, or van
CK: Let us say that you have been just signed by a major label and they say time to move 2500 miles. Now what, would you be able to move?
Akehurst: we dont know about that. we wont know till it actually happens. but we suppose we could definitely move in about 2 years time but as for now, it'll be harsh but i think we could do it
CK: Who are your biggest influences?
Akehurst: grade
somehow hollow
boys night out
CK: What made you want to pursue songwriting?
Akehurst: not sure about that really. we thought to get somewhere as a band we would had to start writing so we just started there really.
CK: What is your favorite song on your current album?
Akehurst: well we haven't got an album but like we said before, we're currently working on a 4 track demo. our favourite song is either one of our first ones we wrote called 'perfection of the era' or one of our newest ones called 'september'
CK: Most people will never know what it feels like to be on stage in front of a crowd, explain to them that feeling:
Akehurst: o well. wot can we say. its great. it blows u away. the adrenaline is just such a rush.
CK: What would you like to change about your city's local music scene?
Akehurst: take all the scene kids away. so there will be only true fans there
CK: Name and describe your most memorable gig.
Akehurst: well thats a tricky one. it will probably have to be the show we played last night in worthing. it was the first time we played there and we headlined. the atmosphere was so good that night. and also all the people there, about 150 of them were people we've never seen before. and they all said we were off the hook and stuff like that. so we think we've made a few more fans that night.
CK: Has the internet really been helpful to your promotion?
Akehurst: yeah, its been great. we've made quite a few fans that found us out via internet
CK: What do you like most about being an INDE artist?
Akehurst: INDE??? if u mean that we're indie. u've got the wrong band lol we're melodic hardcore haha
CK: When did you first start singing, what made you choose music?
Akehurst: well we thought that joe would just sing until we find an actual singer but in the end we found out that joe had a real talent for it so we kept him
CK: What is important to you about the music?
Akehurst: expressing your feelings through your instruments so the listeners can understrand it
CK: Tell us about your website:
Akehurst: www.akehurstmusic.com! its got a message board and a guestbook for everyone that wants to express their feelings about what they think of us. the site is regularly updated with gigs and band information
CK: Introduce the members in the band:
Akehurst: Ryan Gorringe - lead guitar
Joe Carter - rhythm guitar, vox
Mark Hoeppner - bass, backing vox
Ben Mead - drums
CK: If your band could open for a headlining act, who would it be and why?
Akehurst: grade. eventhough they've split up they're our biggest influences as a band and it would be great to meet them and also we're a similar style to them so we'll pull quite a few fans
CK: Who is your favorite unsigned Band?
Akehurst: well somehow hollow, even tho they used to be signed with victory.
CK: Can you name a few of you favorite places on the web for band promotions?
Akehurst: yeah we're on a few of them but we can't think of any from the tops of our heads. sorry!
CK: Describe your typical stage show performance. Give us a hint into what we might expect to see are your show.
Akehurst: we believe that if we move around alot on stage (i.e swing our guitars and jump around everywhere) we can transfer the energy to the crowd so that makes them move around even more.
CK: How big of an impact do you think the underground, indie scene has on the current pop culture?
Akehurst: we dont know really. we're not indie lol
CK: How long does it take for an average song to go from a musical idea to a recordable song?
Akehurst: a long time. you should never rush a song. remember that
CK: What you feel is the most important thing about your music?
Akehurst: we're not sure really. some of our songs have hidden meanings in, so that probably. but some of our songs our just about random things lol
CK: How many members in the band write music?
Akehurst: we all do. we feel that we should write music as a band not just one person.
