VR: Has the internet really been helpful to your promotion?
Chain: Yup, we have a nice looking site which attracts many visitors. It has loads of photo's online and will soon cover few of our mp3's!!! We also link to other bands looking for promotion, so we can help eachother out.
VR: Discribe the times revolved around your song "nameone", that led to it to be written:
Chain: We wrote "Stainless Steel" in a time when there was a lot of useless violence on the streets. It wasnt safe to go out alone on weekend nights, and it took numerous people's lives. Useless violence and abuse still happens and with "Stainless Steel" we're trying to say what we feel and why.
VR: Do your songs have a message?
Chain: Yes, until now all our songs do have a message. We write about drug abuse, demons taking posession of people's lives, exploitation of soldiers by the army and such. We feel delivering a message is part of the expressionist way in writing music. I'm writing a lyric right now that doesnt have a clear message but symbolizes man's fear of big, man-eating animals.
VR: Tell us a story about the making of a song:
Chain: A lot of our songs consist of stand-alone riffs one of us made up or we jammed together with. When we write a song, someone comes up with a lyric and the other one with a riff and the third one comes up with a great chorus riff, it is partly coincedental that these riffs fit together nicely. Occasionaly we think of a riff at the scene or transpose another riff so it fits well in the rest of the song.
VR: What would you do if you lost your musical abilities and are you a fullfilled enough person to accept that if it happened?
Chain: I would be devastated, ofcourse, but I would definetely stay with the band, probably doing some sort of management function, arranging gigs, keeping up the website, etc. The band means a lot to me and I would really love to stay involved at all times.
VR: What are your plans for the future with your band?
Chain: At first we would like to release a demo cd, which will be a big step in the right direction. Then I think we will promote ourselves as much as we can. We would also like to do bigger gigs, at festivals, or opening for another cool, great band. We have plans for arranging festivals with us and other starting metalbands, and we hope one day that CHAIN will sound familiar to people who love metal with all of their heart.
VR: Name and describe your most memorable gig.
Chain: We once did a gig during some sort of "night of the proms" with a horn orchestra, some church choir, and a sailor choir. We played during the break, so it gave people a little "wake-up call", and this was noticeable, however some people liked it more than others!
VR: How do you write your songs (how do you think of them)?
Chain: Most riffs evolve from jamming, expanding the riffs you have with other notes, another way of strumming, letting the other guitar play parts which are a few semitones higher (this is what we love), and just slamming away like hell on your six strings can also help. Usually, one person thinks of the lyrics, and I sometimes adjust words and sentences to make it a little easier to sing.
VR: Give us a run down of your audio equipment:
Chain: I play a B.C. Rich Ironbird guitar, which is not really superb, but it does its work for me. I run this through three BOSS pedals, the CE-5, MT-2 and GE-7 after that the signal goes into my amp, a thrusty old JCM800 50w combo. This gives me a nice warm sound, mainly due to the tube amp.
VR: Virtually Records needs a theme song, would you be interested?
Chain: YES!!! It would be great to write a theme song for you!!! When must it be ready? Next week?
VR: How big of an impact do you think the underground, indie scene has on the current pop culture?
Chain: Not much, there is way too much commercial shit out there like Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, Korn, etc. It is so easy to score a hit if the record company wants to make money with you. I dont see why people dont look further and notice Limp Bizkit's music sucks and they do it all for the money, YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!
VR: Have you ever paid for advertising for the band?
Chain: Yup, sure we spent money announcing our gigs on flyers, posters etc. I think it's part of good promotion, and helps getting people to see your gigs, to see how you really are.
VR: What you feel is the most important thing about your music?
Chain: Having fun in what you do. We have fun writing music, playing it, listening to it, I can't find no other reason than our enjoyment of being in the band. We love the music, the gigs, the people and we are not doing it to get famous, rich or to be admired.
VR: Are there any established artists with whom you would like to collaborate?
Chain: We would love to work together with anyone else who enjoys writing, playing and listening to music as much as us. We feel you can always learn from someone else, everyone has his point of view which is worth listening to.
VR: So, tell me..what exactly, motivates you, the artist to write songs?
Chain: The enjoyment of hearing a riff in my head, playing it on the guitar, introducing it to the band, write a song around it, listen to the finished song and go wild.
VR: If you could talk to anyone in the music business, who would it be?
Chain: Bob Rock, to ask him where he left Metallica's balls.
VR: What is your favorite local venue?
Chain: Uhm... we particulary liked playing in Rockcafe Crossroads in Drachten. They play our style of music, have our kind of attitude, have nice beer (not Heineken, unfortunately) and they have Harley stuff all over the wall!!!
VR: How do you guys put songs together?
Chain: Putting only our heads together will do.
VR: Do you do any recording on your own?
Chain: All recordings we did were on our own, most were at live gigs and some in our rehearsal room. The quality aint that good, but what the hell.
VR: Do you or your organization promote up and coming artists:
Chain: We have many links on our site of bands starting out. They link us too, so we can help eachother, if you want to exchange links too, just mail us!!!
VR: How important do you think tour support is?
Chain: Haha, we never did a tour, but i think all kinds of support are that important, that you can't do without.
VR: What is your favorite chord?
Chain: Depends on what mood I am in, today I feel like Gadd4!!!
VR: Somethings burning.. Did you leave dinner on the stove?
Chain: No, I think it's our dog, setting himself onfire. He does that now and then, just a sec... be right back.
VR: If you could get a message to the inside mp3.com what would that message be?
Chain: "all your mp3's are belong to us"
VR: Do you desire to come up with a new form of music or do you like safety in numbers?
Chain: We just write music the way we like it, it's up to the people to decide what style it is.
VR: How long does it take for an average song to go from a musical idea to a recordable song?
Chain: That ranges from three weeks to three months. It depends on the difficulty of the song and how much riffs we already have.
VR: Tell us about your website:
Chain: Our website is filled with pics, history info, gig dates, links, fun stuff, you should have to see it yourself to judge it. So come to: http://run.to/chain and judge.
VR: Where do you want to be a year from now personally?
Chain: I hope my singing will have improved well, I will take singing lessons soon, and I hope my guitarplaying goes well too, I'm sure it wouldnt hurt to be a bit better. I also hope our demo will be out and we have some more gigs to look forward to!!!
VR: Who is your favorite unsigned Band?
Chain: There are so many we like, check out the website, we linked a few bands which we like!!!
VR: What do your lyrics talk about?
Chain: All kinds of things people talk about to, we only put it to rhyme and support it with a bit of music.
