Ok....I am an Audio idiot....i don't know a damn thing about anything that has to do with audio...what I am doing, as many of you well know, is building a bed...what I want in the bed is 2 big subs(excelent 10's but pref. 12+), powerful amp(tight ass 600W but pref close to 800+), speakers (here's where my real "problem" is...i dont know exactly what size speakers to get)...and a head unit...i already am gonna get a power source so thats no problem...please "build" me a system, ya'know like tell me what to get for around $800...it would really help me.....

What kind of power source are you running this off of that might help so we know how much power the amplifier and the Head unit can pull. also what are you looking for sound quality are loudness out of the subs? also why not build a set of decent indoor speakers instead of buying car speakers... building a system for inside is differnt then building one for a car. You maybe able to get alot better sound if you focused on building speakers to hook up to a indoor reciever as appossed to building one bassed around car parts. you can by component speakers and build boxes meant for homes as appossed to buying stuff meant for cars. and it would probaly sound alot better. my neighbor builds his own speakers for his house and has since the 60's and alls i have to say is just by looking at his boxes and what not for the speakers they are constructed way differntlty then car boxes. mainly because car speakers are meant for a much smaller area then home speakers.

If you are stuck on the idea of using car audio parts then first off make sure your poiwer source is going to pull enough power. A deck is going to pull 20-40amps probaly. a 600watt amp can pull up to 60 amps. right there you could have nearly 80-100amps of power being drawn. which brings up the question if your plugging this into a 110volt outlet what kind of breaker/fuse is on it. all the breakers in my house are 30amp and under which for home use is perfectly fine. because to get watts you have "volts times amps=watts" well at home you have 110volts times 30 amps. well damn thats alot of watts. but in car audio you have 12volt times 30amp. thats alot less. i think thats why you dont see alot of 12volt converters sold with more then 10amps or so. so mattering how your doing this you could have electrical problems. now a battery and a batery charger hook up would cause alot of these problems to go away. also i wouldnt go with like 6x9 or 6.5 2 or 3 way speakers i personaly would go with a cheaper set of components maybe a set of cdt's off the zeb for 150$. and build a box for the mid/bass so it gets a little bit of preasure behind it not alot just a little. also mount the tweeters mroe at ear level. that would probaly be the best sound quality... then i would suggest getting like a 600watt amp and getting 2 alpine type R subs off eabay thats around 230$ with shipping. then you can get multiple decks off the zeb for around 150$ that brings you up to 530. then i saw a good amount of 500 and 600 watt amps on ebay MTX, rockford fosxgate, and lighting audio to name a few all under 200$. so that should work for you if you really want car audio stuff in your house.

well like i said if you really want to build a component type system you can by home speakers in component form and get crossover and all that and build boxes for them. that way its still more of a home made project which seemed to be alot of what you where after. if your going to buy already build speakers. i'm assumeing your going after loud music just because you where looking at 15" woofers. i would suggest JBL they are cheaper but still have decent sound quality. i personaly have a set of Bose 701's in my home but i use them more for movies and tv not alot for music they are amazing clear speakers but they where design for home theater in mind not really loud thumping music. i would then suggest if you are looking for a cheaper Reciver to go with sony... i have a sony and all be it. it is not the best reciever in the world it has all the tweaking option i need and alot of nice features i got mine new for 250$ i'm sure you could get a better one then that for around 200-300 off ebay.
also you could always if you wanted both sound theater quality and hard hitting bass. get a set of Bose 501's off ebay and a 12 or 15 inch powered sub off ebay. matters alot in what you want.

Ok lets start at the beggining i'm assuming music from what you where going to build.... in that case get a decent sony or other brand reciver. one ebay its easy to get for like 200-300$ tops then get a set of floor standing speakers i would suggest JBL they are pretty cheap for what you get... just glancing at ebay they had alot of those for under 300$. and then you have 200$ left over to get either a CD changer or a sub woofer. this is the simpilist way to get a decent home system... i would go to a store as in best buy, circuit city, etc. and just look at speakers and recivers you like then look for them or like models on ebay...

Actualy its a Woofer mid and tweeter... there is a differnce woofers hit at much higher frequencies and dont in general go as low. i would suggest though that he looks at stores but buys online you well get a much better deal... you can get a set of 500$ jbls for half that one ebay. wish i had used ebay back when i bought my 701's i paid the suggested reatail at the bose showcase store. could have got them for almost half that on ebay:(

movadoman2001 on 12/11/2003 14:28:01
they hit pretty low, but yes they are woofers, and at 450 for all four thats more than half off! center was 220 rears 550 fronts 650

Oh i was thinking it was 2 floor standing speakers. for all 5 that is a killer deal that and a reciever would probaly be more then he would need.
