Prev :: Next OK. In my never ending search for a better audio experience... I have been contemplating puting my 2-way CDT CL-61a's in custom kick panels to furthur increase the imaging. (simple enough) Then i realized, CDT, makes a 3 way version. Which includes a 4" MidRange, 6.5" MidBass, and 1" Tweeter (on sale at TheZeb.com for $249) http://cdtaudio.com/classic2000MidDriv.htm Now, is there a reasonable difference in audio going from 2-way to 3-way? I would put the 4" mid and tweeter in the kickpanel and put the 6,5" Mid in the door panel. Would having different speaker axises cause any problems? Sound good? I don't have any experience with 3-way component setups, so i'm not sure if I am just trying for too much. Also, my amp is a Butler Audio Tube Driver Blue 275 = 2 x 75 watts RMS (slightly underrated). Would this be enough to power 3-ways appropriately? or would an investment in an amp be a plan for the future? This amp was damn expensive, so I'd def. not want to part with it anytime soon. Any insights and info would be appreciated. Replies (21) compvr15s on 12/2/2003 16:48:47 im sure the 3-ways have some sound advantage or people wouldnt invest their money in them, im sure they sould better, if used in the system, i also have no experience with the 3-ways, but i know most 2ways sound really nice, so im sure the 3ways are just a step up. they 3ways are rated at 190 rms not sure if thats per side or the whole set, if its per side you will probably need a higher power amp but it thats per set then your will be right in a good power range, wait for ttocs or swez, i myself would like to know the diference. good luck dflock on 12/2/2003 16:57:38 Its 190 RMS for both sides, so about 95 watts RMS per side. So I would figure +/- 20 watts from RMS isn't too bad. compvr15s on 12/2/2003 17:11:24 yea that should do fine, they are pretty efficient, 92.4/ should do the trick Pinch on 12/2/2003 17:10:41 Good choice on those components! CDT makes some great speakers. I have a set of the HD-642s in my 4Runner and I love them. I am running them off a JL 300/2, so each side is getting 150 RMS (they are rated at 200). The guys at CDT said that their speakers will sound great even if underpowered though, so I would recommend at least trying the amp you've got. I would bet dollars to pesos you will be happy. Then, if you want a little more you can step the amp up a notch. compvr15s on 12/2/2003 17:37:16 if yours are rated 200 each side, then im sure them 3-ways are 190 rms each side, not sure though. dflock on 12/2/2003 18:05:46 Hmm... I don't suppose there is a way to create a 2ohm load out of all this is there? I could then run 150 watts RMS with a 2 ohm load... compvr15s on 12/3/2003 17:50:37 i dont think there is a way to do that, it wont hurt just to try the amp you have, just make sure not to expect anything over 75-90watts rms from that amp, im sure they will still slam with with that much clear undistorted power. just make sure to set gains wisely and if it dont work as you want invest in a bigger amp. thezeb.com has a 150x2@4ohm us acoustics amp for $129 would be a good choice if you decide to get a bigger amp, i think they are slightly under rated you you can expect probably 175x2. good luck cplkittle on 12/3/2003 17:57:18 if you have 2 way CDT comps now, and are gong to order 3ways anyway, you could go for overkill and put the 3ways inthe kick panel and leave the 2 ways in the door, wire them parallel and you have a 2ohm load. If I am not mistaken you are asking because your amp is rated higher at a 2 ohm load, should be enough to push them both. compvr15s on 12/3/2003 18:26:49 lol that would be nuts, yea you can wire in parell but then you have worry bout the amp splittin the power to both sets, would probably still be extremely loud. LOL if you do that, take some pictures, dflock on 12/3/2003 18:47:11 cplkittle, that's a great idea! ha... might be a bit over the top, not to mention foot space is already very limited, and I don't know if all 3 speakers would fit and still give me petal room. I will bring this idea up to the fabricator and see what he may think. This idea may also lead me to just get another set of CL-61a's put those in the kicks, and wire in parallel... hmm. cplkittle on 12/3/2003 18:58:49 You may have to set aside a few hundred for a near future purchase of a hearing aid, or rent your truck out to provide sound for raves/parties/etc.. I have been pondering 2 5.5"s front doors, 2 6.5"s rear doors, and 2 6x8s in the rear of my suv. I'll let you know how it sounds if I do it. may be after Christmas before I do it though. dflock on 12/3/2003 19:35:11 How would two sets of components be wired in parallel? now that I think more about it... compvr15s on 12/3/2003 19:39:41 would be just like singe 4 ohm voice coil subs. pos+pos to the pos on your amp and neg+neg to the neg on your amp. whats the impedence from the crossover? its probably close to 4omhs. should work fine that way dflock on 12/3/2003 22:48:09 The crossovers are 4 ohm... so basically, I would just link the neg from Cross1 to the negative of cross2. Then Link the Pos of Cross2 with the pos of cross1? dflock on 12/4/2003 14:33:16 My Cl-61a(s), are 1" Silk Domes, the only models sold for $150 on TheZeb.com now are the ones with .75" Titanium Tweets. Now, would there be an issue mixing Titaniums with Silks? Or would this actually be even better? I also have a second set of tweeters on my dash for ""ambient" fill, those are 1" Silks... what I might do is move those into my kicks and put the .75's as my ambients. Any input? compvr15s on 12/4/2003 17:38:33 in my system i have titanium tweets from mb quart in my dash and then silk that mount on a piller in the middle of my comp set that are in my doors, its kind of hard to tell since i can hear the tweets in the dash so much easier becuase they reflect of the windshield and the comps fire strait into my leg, if you go with 2 sets of comps then your wont even need them other tweets that you have now. any other q's? dflock on 12/4/2003 19:13:10 I figure on remounting the .75 titaniums as "ambients". I will face them away from me and towards the windows. Hopefully bringing the sound stage to the hood of my car... wouldn't that be nice! 6 tweeters is something close to ridiculous, but if it sounds great then I will be all smiles. Of course its friggin 23 degrees out, so god knows when I will be able to get all this done. But I don't want to miss a sale like this. Anyone have any idea what might remove "GOOP" from vinyl window pillars? ;) Buickman94 on 12/4/2003 20:52:17 cant you use GOOP to clean vinyl? dflock on 12/4/2003 23:36:25 The "GOOP" I have is glue. Comes out in a clear liquid form, then dries in 10-15 minutes to a rock. I'm thinking rubbing alcohol or mineral spirits. Hopefully. _derek uochronos on 12/4/2003 23:56:57 minerial spirits well bleach the color out of the vinyl hehe i made that mistake once myself... most paint thinners are very hard on vinyls and plastics. cplkittle on 12/8/2003 15:46:36 leave a wet rag on it overnight and see if that softens it up some. Most glues will unless you used an epoxy. Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
