Need help choosing an amp

by terps026   Front Page * FAQ Forum * Archive Index   Prev :: Next

I just bought 2 10" Audiobahn flame q series subs for my 97 grand prix gtp. Here are the specs...
Power Handling - 900 W RMS (each sub)
Voice coil - 2.5" Dual 4 Ohm
Operation - 2 Ohms or 8 Ohms...

I was just wondering what kind of amp I need for these subs , and what would be the most effective way to wire them. Any help would be appreciated . Thanks

well, the JL 1000/1 or the JBL 1200.1 would be a couple good choices, also look at kicker for their mono amps, as that would be a little better than the JBL. again, if you are going to be putting this size system inside your car, you will need a new High output alternator and most likely an optima yellowtop battery.

All suggested amps are based on the given RMS rating for the subs, I wouldnt trust audiobahn enough to push more than the RMS to the subs. and im sure it will sound fine with any of the amps suggested.

what is the price range?

Yes, what is the price range you have in mind?

Also, strongly suggest a Class D MONO amp if possible. Most 2 channel amps are typically Class A/B which in laymen's terms means... large current draw and lower efficiency ratings.

As was mentioned earlier, a 1000 watt RMS amp will draw 100 + amperes of current, all by itself. Not sure what alt size you have in that vehicle now, but if less than ~130A, may have to upgrade the ALT/BAT and a few wires too, if you go with a large amp.

PS JL is a very nice amp, but a bit pricey. JBL 1200.1 will deliver >1200 watts RMS @ 13.0 volts. This amp is cheaper in price, but high in value. Not a lot of toys on it... just brute power and very reliable.... under $300.00 off E-bay.
