Not really Car Audio question but.....

Hey havent really been active on this site much, but i get on whenever I can.. I read this site alot, but never really post much.. Just like to read..

Well, my question has really nothing to do with car audio, but this is the only site I know that has a massive amount of incredibly smart people in it when it deals with sounds and electronics.. I started this recording school appreticeship a couple weeks ago, and you have to read this book which is really really technical and answer these questions.. Then go into the studio for the "hands on" portion of what you just read.. I completed all the questions besides one that Ive tried to complete for a couple days now and no go... Can anyone help? I know you probably wont have a clue if you didnt do the reading, but It cant hurt to ask right??

The question:

Harmonics of various intensities within the sound wave determines ____________.

the only thing I came across is Amplitude...

sorry for the long post but this is really bothering me... Thanks for any help.

The number and amplitude of the harmonics determines the characteristic sound of the instrument.

Typically, the strength of the harmonics decreases with harmonic number. The relative strengths of the harmonics determines the timbre of the tone.

Hey thanks for those links.. I read your post and reread the section about harmonics in the book and kinda put two and two together..

Read this....... I found this in the book im reading.... I think this is the answer but Im not sure...

The harmonics and thei relative intensities (which determine an instrument's characteristic sound) are called the timbre of an instrument. If we changed an instrument's harmonic balance, the sonic character of the instrument would also be changed...

So would the answer be timbre?
