Ok here is the question well one sub rated at 1000 watts be just as loud and clear as the same brand of sub if you got 2 that where rated at 500? basicaly i'm getting a phoenix gold titanium series 1200.1 amp and i dont know whether to get 1 12" sub that can take all that power or 2 that can handle 600 each. i'm going for SQ mainly. space is also at a premium since i have a 2003 ranger extended cab i would prefer to get just one sub so that i still have one of the back jump seats... but i wont throw away SQ just to keep a seat:)

ok here are the subs i'm looking at 3 JL w6 12", 2 JL audio w7 12", or 1 JL audio w7 13.5"... these are the speakers i listed just because jl is a good brand everyone knows of i dont know if i well get these or not if i can find another speaker that has the same specs for cheaper i would get it. i just cant decide to get 3, 2, or 1.

I have heard alot of good things about the 13's. I have a friend who has a pair in his expedition in a really fancy custom box ($1200 setup) and they really kick butt!!! he has all mb quart components with an alpine HU. His whole setup is the perfect balance of sq and spl. I have never heard any distortion from the subs, even at volumes that make your heart adjust its rhythm. They are definitely loud and clean. I think he was pushing them with an alpine amp.. not too sure about that though.

ya but is 1 13 going to give me the equvilent to 2 12's? the 13 can have an rms of 1000-1400 it says on the page and thats what i would be feeding it. and 2 12's would have 700 each??

I think Swez noted that the difference between one 12 and 2 12's was a gain of 3db. I think you will get better sq with one higher powered sub than two. I don't have anything to back that up though.
as far as the space issue, you could try an isobaric setup. I don't know if that is better for SQ though. I have always wanted to try an isobaric box with differently tuned boxes on each side. I don't know how that would affect the excursion, you wouldn't think it would with the speakers being sealed face to face, but I don't know.

If anyone knows whether a single JL w7 13.5 would be better sq and equal loudness to 2 JL w7 12's.. i think i would really likw the 1 13.5 better but i dont want to lose alot of power. from the sounds of it the 13.5 is a better speaker on paper anyway
