fried tweets

HELP! I've got whats probably a very dumb question. I've installed several sets of components in my car over last couple of years and am having two specific problems. i keep frying the tweets and the drivers sound not so mid bassy. am currently running clarion mids/tweets that are built together with larger better quality crossovers and am having same problem. (only one tweet has melted so far). my questions are, 1. does the tweeter handle less power than the mid driver (both rated at 180 watts max and have approx 50 watts rms being driven in), and 2. is there any way to cut the power down to the tweets? any help is greatly appreciated as this is starting to cost me alot of dough. MAD
thanx in advance.

Thanx for the advice, but i'm thinking thats kinda not what i'm after. Like it loud. i'm wondering if maybe upgrading the tweets only is the answer. anyone have any suggestions on brand or any ideas on original problem? By the way, thanx to all who have put time and effort into making this site work. Its great to be able to get so many opinions on so many topics.

I have fried a few myself.. had a cheap amp on them. Replaced the amp and haven't had any problems. go figure
I did buy some cheap tweets once advertised at 300w, on the inside it said that if they were to be used at higher than 25w an additional resistor (not included) was needed.

I'm running them with a rockford 400.4 which is 50 watts per channel @4ohms. less than a year old, wasnt cheap. I'm curios about the resistor thing, but i'm assuming that the crossover that came with seperates has that built in. Come on guys, I dont want to have to take ttocs advise and keep it turned down (no offence man.)

Pop open the xover and see if there are any jumpers you can move around to give you some options. On mine, there are 3 settings for the tweet: -3dB, 0, and +3dB depending on where the jumper goes (factory setting is 0). Obviously, you would probably want to try the -3dB setting so the tweet wouldn't have to play as loud as your mids... Good luck!
