it should tell you on the box or in the specs. I know there are some that transmit on a low fm freq, but as far as compatibility, i am not sure. Some even plug in with a tee into your antenna jack on the back of your radio. I know the JVC 12 disc changers do. I have one in my car that plugs directly into my HU, but it is a JVC also. I did install the same changer in my mother's factory stereo through the antenna jack. What brand/make/model changer are you looking at?

if you want to control the chngr, from the radio, yes they need to be the same. If you are going fm modulated, it will hook up to any.
