Hey guys, I'm a newbie at this stereo installation process, so bear with me. I don't know how much of this problem you can help me with so any help would be apreciated. I got a new stereo for my '89 chevy caprice, along with the stereo, I have a Metra wiring harness. There are 4 more wires on the harness than there were wires going into my old stereo. I know how to hook up each of the 8 left/right, rear/front speaker wires to the harness. And I can figure out the other wires such as 12 volt power. But the last 4 I have no clue what to do with. I am assuming, according to the EIA wiring color code, 2 of the wires coming from the wire harness I dont need to connect to anything are "Amp Turn - On" and "Amp Ground", since I didn't buy an amp. Am I correct so far? Now that leaves 2 wires left in question, I am pretty sure my car doesn't have a pre-existing grounding wire, so that is the third wire that I don't have to connect to any other wire. I guess I simply have to run that wire from the harness to some place on the chassis. Does this sound right? The last wire I'm not sure about, according to the color code, is the "Power Antenna" wire. The antenna wire in my car doesn't seem to be a wire at all, its more like a cable, that fits into its own socket in the back of my stereo. So I am assuming that the wire coming from the wiring harness thats colored to be the "Power Antenna" wire doesn't have any use either. If you cant tell already, I have no f*ing clue what I'm doing, but I'm trying to exlain this as best I can. Thanks for your help. Replies (3) cplkittle on 11/16/2003 23:30:25 the only wires you need to hook up are the 8 speaker wires, power, ground, and a yellow or orange memory wire (connected to the battery, always powered) There are grounds on most factory plugs, you can find it with an ohm meter if you are not sure which one it is, but it is also a good idea to ground the stereo cabinet as well. most power antenna wires along with the amp remote are blue. these are for antennas which retract when the car is shut off or the stereo is turned off. ttocs on 11/17/2003 10:56:33 that car has a common ground amplified system. If you look in the trunk behind the liner that covers the rear seat and rear tray you will find a haxagon peice of metal, it is the premuim sound amp. There is a bypass kit that you can get to go around it, or else you will have to trace the signal wires to where they are common and seperate them, or run new wires to each speaker. The bypass is the easiest, but is a few more $$ as well(10-20). CrashMechanic on 11/17/2003 11:01:43 Okay first it sounds like you did fine in figuring out the wires. According to what you said. I have a question is your antenna supposed to move up and down on its own when your turn the radio on. If that isn't one of your cars features then you don't have to worry about that wire. Now what is the brand and Model # of your new Head Unit (HU). Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
