Bought some subs on ebay last night, 12" natural sound series audiobahn AW1251T got the pair NIB for under $100. My Kenwood 600W amp will have to do for now. These subs are DVC 400watt 2 or 8 ohm. My kenwood (KAC-729S) will push 600 peak bridged @4 ohms. When I hook up the voice coils I should wire them parallel to get 2 ohms ea, and wire the speakers together giving me 4 ohms (in series). Is this right? This is the first time I have dealt with 2 dvc subs. I am getting 4 ohms from the amp, but I'm not sure about the subs when they say 2 or 8 ohm. does that include 4 ohm? or is it just a safe assumption that if they can handle 2 and 8 they should be able to handle 4? Commonly called a 2/4/8 ohms DVC... 4 ohm DVC for short) If you run the amp in 2 channel mode, wire 1 sub VC pair in PARALLEL for a 2 ohm load. Do this for both channels as this is the easiest way to connect a 2 channel and DVC's. Each channel will see a 2 ohm load and deliver max output in this way. If you opt for "bridging" the amplifer to MONO (1 channel output), each sub is wired series for a pair of 8 ohm loads. Then you can parallel wire both subs to the amp output for a 4 ohm load. The power to each sub is the same, which ever way you choose. Just don't try to wire the subs in full parallel to the amp as this would net a 1 ohm load and the amp will freak out, shut off or let out some "magic smoke" !!! Got it? I can still smell that magic smoke as it is burned into my head. it's that $400 uh-oh smell. lol Swez on 11/16/2003 10:25:26 Yeah... don't ya just hate that sinking feeling when you smell the smoke and the speakers stop playing? Never had that experience personally, but have mopped up other's systems that lost the "magic smoke" . It ain't pretty huh? Swez cplkittle on 11/16/2003 23:18:45 That was when I bridged an amp that wasn't exactly designed for that. lucky for me it was a freebie used legacy, so there was no loss Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
