i just started a new job this week, its a factory job. i run a cutoff machine that runs bars and tubes anywhere for 1/2 inch upto 2 1/2 inchs. they dont require hearing protection there but they do recommend it and have plenty of protection there. my question is will my hearing be affected. the machine isnt that loud at all but i have to run this god-awfully loud grinder to grind the tits off the end of the bars. i only use the grinder in like 3 or 4 second intervals, will it affect me the same way as hearing if for like 2 hrs strait or will it not matter since i only hear it for a few seconds at a time. any suggestions or comments will be great, i really dont wanna wear ear plugs because they are annoying but then again i dont wanna go deaf either. thanx alot, and goold luck on relocating swez

You would be well advised to wear hearing protection in the noisy parts of the shop. Some of the worst damage is done to hearing by punch presses and other percussive noise.

Our ears cannot react fast enough to periodic or shot term bursts of high SPL. If in a loud, sustained SPL environment, definitely get some ear plugs or a head set.

PROTECT YOUR HEARING... ONCE DAMAGED, NO TURNING BACK THE CLOCK !!!

Can you get your hands on an SPL meter from the plant safety depeartment? Ask them to take static and transient noise levels. If you see spikes above 105 dB... get ear protection.

I very much agree with Swez. Wether you like it or not wearing hearing protection in high noise environments is a must, and since you say that you don't like ear plugs, ask your safety department if they can look into getting ear muffs. I do agree that ear plugs suck, especially the disposable ones, so I wear ear muffs, but sometimes I have to wear both ear plugs and ear muffs like when I am next to a running jet engine. But basicly, if you are going to lose your hearing from loud noise it might as well be from noises that you enjoy( like your fav songs bangin real loud on your your system) than from the stupid annyoing same old noise that you hear day in an day out, so wear ear protection at work. And also another key thing to be noticed is that if you think its loud then no matter what the rules and regs say, wear ear protection, and no one can tell you that you are being too safe on the job, because you are the best just of your own health and safety.

yea i found a pair that i like, the factory supplies everything we need for protection, they have like 7 or 8 different types to choose from, they just give them to us a box at a time(200 pairs or so), company must be hurtin for money eh? lets just give our 1000 employees their own box of ear plugs, plus they pay 100 dollars towards steeltoe boots, 100 dollars towards safety glasses, and like 50 dollars a year towards eye/ hearing exams each, i think i finally found the job i like lol, will have benifits starting december 1st, plus paid thanksgiving, 2 weeks paid for christmas, birthday off paid lol enough bout me but thanx for all the help, i may see if they can get an spl meter and check it out, since 3rd shift is pretty laid back and we get to do alot more stuff than the other shifts, maybe once they are done with the meter they will just give it to me haha. thanx alot!!!

Yeah... good choice and sounds like a very good company you hooked up with too. Congrats dude!

Oh, 3rd shift is nice once you get used to the hours. No "WHITE SHIRTS" prowling about to get in the way of productivity. hehe
