I have 2 alpine Type R 4ohm X 4ohm DVC 10inch subs. There rms is 300 each and there peak power handling is 1000watts each. I curently have a phoenix gold tantrum series 500x2 amp bridged to them and it sounds pretty nice but i can get a tantrum 1200.1 or a octane series 1500.1 amp for around 300$ a really good deal new. well can these subs handle that power from either of these amps? as long as i'm keeping the gain down? i had a cheap sony xplod sub that only had an RMS of 250watt with a make of 600watts and i was runing that on the same phoenix gold 500.2 i curently have so i'm thinking if a cheap sony can handle being over powered for months and still sound good an not blow these alpines should... but i dont want to blow them anyone got any advice on this? Replies (2) Swez on 11/8/2003 10:00:59 The Alpines are rated for 300 watts continous power/ea. In a small sealed enclosure, they will take a bit more power. But if ported, they can be blown out with much less power as they reach X-max with less power at very low bass notes. Since you already have a very nice amp and plenty of power for these subs, stand pat and stay put on your settings as this amp can easily over stress your present subs. If you hear mechanical noise or excess distortions from the sub, have gone too far on the power input. Finally, your amp does not put out a continous power value to the subs. The amount of power changes constantly with the input source (music) the amp receives. If you had a test tone CD, you'd notice when the amp is working hard as the continous tones (30 - 80 Hz) will really work the cones fully for short periods of time. This type of testing, really shows when your amp gain setting are at optimal power. Once you reach max excursion of the subs, things begin to fail beyond that point, over time. Comments?
