OK...i set a 500 dollar limit for myself on a sub and amp. i would like to find a nice 12 and a mono amp to run it for this price. Im looking for spl but also want good sq. if i have to spend a lil bit more i will but i'd like to stay at 500. I listen to mostly rap w/ some rock and techno. Any suggestions? Thanks...

I would look into JBL mono amps. The PB600.1 (600watts RMS) and BP1200.1 (1200watts RMS) are both great amps that show there full power output at 1 or 2 ohms.

The best place to get these would be either ebay or Ikesound.com. only $259.00 for the 1200.1 and $189.00 for the 600.1.

As far as subs go, there are a lot of different options. You could actually get 2 adire shiva mark III's for $250, power then with a Jbl 600.1 and have a hard hitting system that sounds great. Or you can go with 1 and save a few bucks.

If space isnt a big concern, i wuold also look at the adire tempest, its a 15inch sub, basically a larger shiva. can be had for $150 at adireaudio.com

You also may want to factor in an amp installation kit and a box for the subs. This can add up, anywhere from $50-100+, depending on if you build your own box or by a prefab.

A great place to buy wires is http://www.knukonceptz.com/

im sure someone else will cover anything i missed as well as other options...becuase there are a lot.

nice job there buick, sounds pretty good to me, for amps, there isnt much better wattage/price ratio than the JBL BP series, but again, lol, buick, wont bring this up too much, but u always gotta be looking at alternator strain as well, ahh nvm we wont get into that lol. but yeah, another sub you could look into is the Resonant engineering HC series subwoofer. one of those would rock ur car like crazy. pair it up with a 1200.1 and u would be ready to go. they sell the HC at discount car stereo for $250, and the 1200.1 is 259 on ikesound, so it looks to be around your price range

have fun

I agree with both posted remarks. JBL 600.1 draws a max current of 57A. The 1200.1 draws 114A max. If you have enough ALT/BAT power, the 1200.1 will give you +1200 RMS @ 1 or 2 ohms.

The Shiva/Tempest are great low priced woofer and can take a good amount of power as well. Thing is, it is 4/8/16 ohm DVC. Lowest you can get w/ a single Tempest is 4 ohms. That nets 300/600 RMS respectively with JBL 600/1200.1 amps. You'd need a pair of either to get the most from JBL amps.

The RE sub is a great choice for SQL as they are 2+2 DVC's and can handle more input power. (1200 RMS in small sealed enclosures) Yes, they cost more... but they are solid performers and lots of guys are jumping on these for high SQL appications. Very good SQL in medium size sealed (1.25 cf for 12") or 1.9 cf. You can get the job done with only 1 of these subs.

What are the opinions on JL just out of curiosity. We always plug jbl.

xplicitblitzboi on 11/3/2003 21:58:03
well the reason we always plug JBL is because they have the best dollar to wattage ratio. JL amps are great, better than JBL, but they will cost u, and hes on a pretty tight budget.

Swez on 11/3/2003 22:05:44
JL makes fine gear.. but they do not sell off the web w/ warrantee plans and you have to pay big $$$ for thier gear.

Yes, very good products in all lines... but they are very high cost.

Thanks for all the input guys...ok lets see...i know i am looking at more $ for wires box etc...this is just my budget for the amp and sub. i looked at the jbl 1200.1 and i liked what i saw. The only problem is i dont know if i have enough alt/bat to run it. im running the stock alt and i cannot find one spec on it anywhere...owners guide, operating guide, or the repair manual. I am also running the stock bat right now but it wouldnt be a problem if the upgrade had to be done. i also could not find the RE hc sub on discountcarstereo. could somone send me a direct link to it(i know its probly right in front of my face) Thanks again for the input guys...if i find the specs to my alt ill post it tonight and see if you guys think it could handle it...Thanks!!!

I found these on ikesound.com let me know what you guys think

Audiobahn AWT12 X - 260.10
http://ikesound.com/product-product_id/444

Audiobahn ALUM12Q - 115.00
http://ikesound.com/product-product_id/434

Kicker S12L7 4 - 189.00
http://ikesound.com/product-product_id/1162

Of the 3 subs noted, the Alum 12Q/12X, is probably your best value for SQL bass. The other 2 subs are more SPL designed and the Kicker will not take the power of the 1200.1 when using only 1 sub.

The 12Q/12X is a 6/6 voilce coil design. Wired in parallel, you get 3 ohms which nets ~900 watts RMS from the 1200.1. There would be very little difference in SPL you'd hear from 900 VS 1200 watts RMS. (~1.5dB of SPL) This is probably the best value in all and if you go ported with this 12Q, you'd pick up ~+3dB. ***

So we have what......

JBL 1200.1 Amp $259.00
Alum 12Q Sub 115.00
Alum 12X Sub 95.00 (Zeb audio)

That's $354 - 374.00 plus S/H charges.

Note: *** When using ported designs and the JBL Power series amps, you want to use subsonic filtering to protect your amp and sub against high SPL signals below the port tuned frequency. These filters are cheap and easy to use and only cost ~$30.00 a set. The filter you choose, will be dependent on the tuned frequency of the sub enclosure.

http://www.thezeb.com/caraudio/harrision_labs.html FMods

900073 20hz Hi-Pass Subsonic FMOD (pair) $ 28.99
900059 30hz Hi-Pass FMOD (pair) Out of Stock $ 28.99
Depending on your enclosure tuning freq, the 20 or 30 Hz HP will do well.

Found this at: http://www.thezeb.com/caraudio/audiobahn
_subwoofers.html

ALUM12X 2001 Model Closout! 12" Subwoofer w/ dual 6ohm voice coils - 1000 watts RMS $ 94.99! Similar to the Q series, just a 2001 model year. (save $20.00)

OK, that leaves you wanting for a wiring kit and a sub enclosure.

Wiring kits: http://www.knukonceptz.com/detail.asp?product_id=KOLAK4 $30.00

The sub enclosure specs can be found in the owners manual for the sub or you can go to the Bahn web site and find the specs for box there. You can build the box yourself (if you are handy and have the tools) or look for a prefab enclosure that matches Bahn specs on this sub.

Figure ~$50.00 in materials to build and ~4-6 hrs labor. A custom enclosure may run $150-200.00, if you had one made per Bahn specs. A good prefab will cost ~ $125.00 + S/H.

Finally, that 90A alt will probably do the job with some help from a new battery. Look for something that nets close to 1000 CCA. Optima Red Top is a good staple... but not cheap. NAPA offers the same version in a house brand for much less. Your stock battery is probably 550-700 CCA rated now. It may work for a time. But if the battery is older than 4 years, it's on it's last leg.

Whew... this is a lot of information at one time!

Hope that helps,
