What is IB short for? I've been seeing it used alot lately and havent been able figure out what it stands for. Replies (2) ttocs on 10/29/2003 02:02:48 infinite baffle, it is a fancy name for a way to mount a sub. Its been a while since I have heard or used the term, I believe it means what you and I call free air mounting, correct me if I am wrong on this guys.... bobbi-digi on 10/29/2003 03:37:03 Yes infinite baffle is the rarely used synonym for free-air. Only subwoofers which been pronounced as free-air-use ok should be put into IB applications. Else, you'll end up with a strange sounding, and poorly performing setup from what I've seen. I think I'd advise anyone to just go ahead and build a custom box for a their subs before I'd advise them to run infinite baffle - but that's probably just because I've never implemented an IB design so I couldn't say how they perform in comparision to the small sealed boxes I've traditionally stuck by.
