i have a VR3 400watt 4channel amp a freind gave me and only 2 channels work.i was want ing to know if i am able to fix the other 2 Replies (4) ttocs on 10/27/2003 23:07:53 it can be repaired, but the cost may not be cheap. Now do you mean you, yourself? Swez on 10/28/2003 09:42:48 It's possible to have the amp repaired. Most bench fees range about $60.00 plus parts from a good tech. If the amp only has a few blown output transistors, parts will be not too bad... but if there are power supply problems to go along with that channel set, the price may be higher than the amp is worth... unless you can fix it yourself. Have you opened the casing and had a good look inside yet? It could be something simple like lose RCA input solder joints on that channel set... or more complex. Look for charred parts or discolorations on the board a well. It may even be a s simple as a few cold solder joints. Swez cougars_rock on 10/31/2003 12:18:23 ok thanks i will open it up and look around inside Swez on 10/31/2003 19:24:50 You may need to pull the board, use a bright light and a good magnifying lense. Look to charred components, loose solder joints and cold soldering joints (grainy grey look) not a shiney silver look. You may see some amber colored material on the back side of the board. This is solder flux that had not been removed when the board was populated. This can be cleaned with a toothbrush and rubbing alcohol. This will give you a very good look at the board and joints. Do you have any experience soldering and testing electronic components? If yes, this can pretty easy. If not... may best be left to experienced hands. Comments? Swez PS Cold solder joints are the most common issue in most amp problems. The other options are power supply problems and blown output transistors. These can be tested if you have a multi-meter handy and some heads up on testing transistors. If you are game, we can walk you through some of the basics.
