Amp selection

I was wondering if anyone could give me a little help. I am new at this car stereo stuff so please be patient with me.

I recently bought a used 1994 Jimmy that has a Pioneer DEH-515 head unit. I have no specs on the head unit and can’t find them anywhere. I am assuming that the previous owner had installed some sort of system because he left 2 sets of RCA preout cables along with the remote turn on running to the back of the car.

I would like to install two subwoofers that I have, but I do not know what type of amp I need or how to hook it up correctly. I have done some research on “how to hook up an amp” but it still seems confusing to me, and I would like to do it the right way.

The subwoofers have these specs:
Enclosure Type – Port radiation
Speaker component – 6.3” cone
Impedance – 8 ohms
Sensitivity – 83dB
Frequency response – 40Hz – 100Hz
Power Handling Capacity – Continuous Pink Noise; 60W (40Hz – 20kHz), 20W (40Hz – 100Hz) / Continuous Program; 180W (40Hz – 20kHz), 60W (40Hz – 100Hz).

I hope this information is helpful.

Please let me know what amp you think I should get. Thank you. HAPPY

Sounds like the guy before you had a sub system in there already so wiring should be there and good to go? Do you know what size (gage) power wire is there now?

As for those subs, they really cannot take too much power and from the specs you noted, sounds like a home system woofer set?

A modest 2 channel amp will do the trick here. Something with 50-75 watts per channel Continous power is adequate and will be cheap too. You can bridge the amps noted and wire the subs in parallel for a perfect 4 ohm load match. We can help you there too.

Have a look at these:

1. http://www.thezeb.com/caraudio/us_acoustics.html
USX2050 Amplifier - 50x2 @ 4ohm - 160 watts RMS total $72.99! ***

2. http://www.thezeb.com/caraudio/rockfordfosgateamps.html
G11602 2001 Punch 160.2 40x2 @ 4ohm - 160 watts RMS total
$119.99 ***

3. http://www.justamps.com/
JBL P802 2x40 1x160 $99.99 ***

4. http://www.justamps.com/
Phoenix Gold 1PG-QX180.2 2 2x50 1X180 $124.99 ****

All these amps are quality products at very low prices. Each will deliver a tad more power than your woofers can handle at full power, but if you set the gains and crossovers properly, you'll have clean power to spare.

We can walk you through the install and set up process so no worries there OK? A very noobie friendly site here and welcome.

BTW, these subs you have... I assume you have 2 of them in an enclosure already? Yes/No

The wiring is there....but he took out the power wire....what gague should I use?. The only thing that is wired is the 2 sets of RCA and the remote turn on wire.

I took the head unit out and looked at the two RCA ouputs. They were labeled "Front Out" and "Rear Out". Since I am only going to hook two subwoofers which RCA output should I use or does it matter??

Yes I do believe that they are a home system set.....does that make it a problem?.....I would like to try and make these work instead of buying new subs.

Yes there are two of the subs, already in two sperate enclosures.

These are them http://www.toa.jp/international/products/ps-speakers/fb-10.htm

I apreciate your help and will for sure take a look at thoes amps!!

Thanks again

For the amps noted, a #8 gage power and ground are fine. If you think you may upgrade to a larger system later... you can install #4 power and ground to build a bigger system later.

As for RCA's to use, the rear channels are good. That will allow you to expand the system later if you choose to do so. Also, you can control the output of the subs via the fade control in the HU.

Wire kits:

Need 15-18 ft power wire here, #4 gage

1a. http://www.knukonceptz.com/detail.asp?product_id=KOL8R
#8 gagae here

2. http://www.knukonceptz.com/detail.asp?product_id=KOL4BKS
Need ~3 feet here #4 gage here

2b. http://www.knukonceptz.com/detail.asp?product_id=KOL8BK
#8 gage here

Fuse Holder: http://www.knukonceptz.com/detail.asp?product_id=FH24

Fuses: http://www.knukonceptz.com/detail.asp?product_id=AGU30

That should do you on power feed, ground and fuse etc.

These subs will work in your car... just not sure how much power they can take in the 40-100 Hz range. Looks like ~60 watts Continous per sub, so the amps noted earlier and wiring shoud be OK for now and future upgrades.
