I'VE GOT A 2002 NAVIGATOR AND I'M LOOKING AT PUTTING SOME THUNDER IN IT. I WAS LOOKING AT A PAIR OF 15" VIPERS THAT HAVE THE ALUMINUM CONE. THE DUDE SAID IT WOULDN'T TAKE A HUGE BOX AND THEY WOULD HAMMER. WOULD THESE BE GOOD FOR MY RIDE? I LISTEN TO ALOT OF RAP AND HEAVY ROCK. ALSO ARE THEY GOOD SUBS? HE SAID I CAN HAVE THEM FOR 225.00 APEICE. Replies (8) Swez on 10/16/2003 23:47:11 Not familiar with Viper subs... got a link so we can check out the product specs etc? How much power are you thinking about throwing at these subs? Swez ttocs on 10/17/2003 03:15:46 I have never heard of them either. First lesson, realize the salesmen wants to sell you what is best for him. We just like to help people. Tell us what kind of music you listen to, what you want out of the system, and we will guide you as to where to go, and what to buy. Car audio has huge markup, some of the highest in retail electronics. If you know where to look and what to look for, you can find stuff for alot less.... DAM_SAM on 10/17/2003 09:59:28 They were trying to set me up with a viper amp also that puts out 1100 rms at 1 ohms. I listen to mostly rap and hard rock but it's not out of my character to listen to classical on a daily basis. I also have a Ps2 and monitors in it so I don't know if how that would affect things. I'm planing on leaving the stock unit in simply because my wife don't want me to (hack) up the dash. I plan on dropping some new 6 by 8's in and running another amp to them. I like to hammer but I also appreciate a good balance of mids and highs. Not a basshead (well not really but kinda). I'm also looking for something that won't eat up a massive amount of space. Maybe some subs that require a small box volume. I appreciate any input. Swez on 10/17/2003 23:36:50 Is this the amp series you are thinking about? http://www.drdetailshop.com/viperaudiomain.htm Not cheap, but the features seem to be there. I guess the magic question is whether you need all that bass. That vehicle will shake and rattle like crazy with that much bass. Loads of D-mat needed to quiet the rattles etc. Don't know anything about this amp other than specs noted earlier... but there are a few 12 and 15" subs that will take this kind of power. The Adire Brahma series comes to mind. Have a look: http://www.adireaudio.com/mobile_audio/drivers/brahma_series.htm This is one bad a$$ sub for the price. Works well in small sealed or larger ported enclosures. Comments? Swez Relax_The_Mind on 10/18/2003 01:39:54 hmm... I think that setup that guy is trying to sell you is bass overload for your taste . meaning you would probably listen to half your system most of the time and never really ever use the extra wattage that cost you big bucks... also given that much bass... it could also damage cd/dvd players in the long run as well as other things. Id say one 15" (of your choice from the mentioned above) in a ported box tuned to lets say the 35hz range. While spending the extra loot you save on a well designed box to fit your space needs maybe even removable. actually i think that infinity perfect in that sealed box from crutchfield is nice...loud as ish. too... but lord knows the day i tell someone to purchase subs from crutchfield... im rambling... RTM DAM_SAM on 10/19/2003 19:43:38 Thanks for the info guys. I think I'll stick with one of the major brand amps like Fosgate or something similar. I gotta agree on what was said about the overkill. I really don't want to damage any of my video equipment. I don't see why I need a 15 that requires that much power. Wouldn't a pair of Kicker comps hammer just as good with half the power? One last dumb question, I've been outta the game for a while so whats a good amp to run with that has a good signal to noise ratio, power supply, and can be bridged to 1 or 2 ohms? Thanks!! Junier on 10/19/2003 20:07:45 You can get a JBL 1200.1 from ebay for really cheap and it's 1ohm and 2ohm stable... This amp is the best bang for the buck right now IMO. Junier Swez on 10/19/2003 20:37:36 Yep, I would agree... JBL Power Series makes a very good quality, no frills, butt kickin' amps. They come in several sizes: 150 - 1200 watts RMS and all are Class D (High eff.) designs that will do 1 or 2 ohms. These are the best value for the money I know of. (watts per dollar) Very solid, durable and reliable too. Look at the BP xxxx.1 Monovalve amps: http://www.jbl.com/car/products/category.aspx?cat=amp About Kicker Comps... these are mostly designed for SPL and if you really want full deep bass, they require pretty large boxes to get the low end bass. Cheap...yes, good SPL... yes, good SQ... NOT ! How much bass do you really want in this NAV? If you want realistic Home theater SQ, the amps noted are fine. But how much power and space do you want to allocate toward the sub enclosure and how much are willing to spend? (rough estimate) We can put a nice package together for you, if you have the answers to the questions noted above. Swez Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
