Smaller subs?

Hi everyone,

A friend of mine has a 2003 Ford Ranger (standard-cab, not extended) and he wants to put some bump in it - but it is hard to find a box that will even hold one ten and fit inside.

We can fit a box that holds one 8, but I've never ran an 8-inch sub so I'm not sure if it would even be worth it.

Can anyone recommend an 8-inch sub that will perform well? I was looking at a Rockford HX2 8-inch just because it can take 400W rms, but it freq. response is 40-400 Hz - and it would be nice if it could play lower than 40hz.

Any info appreciated y'all!

Audiobahn makes a few 8" long throw subs. Here's one to consider:

http://www.audiobahninc.com/prod/woofers/AW800.htm

1. AW800X 2001 Model Closout! 8" Subwoofer w/ dual 4ohm voice coils - 300 watts RMS $ 54.99!

2. AW800Q 8" Subwoofer w/ dual 4ohm voice coils - 300 watts RMS $139.99

That Ranger std cab is a tough vehicle to do bass in. Not much room behind the seat so you may wish to look at under the seat designs.

MTX makes a neat little enclosure if he has a 60/40 split bench seat. Not much of a sub... 10", 6000 series sub, 250 RMS... but this sub can be removed and a better sub installed.

Good luck,

you can fit a single 10" without loosing any notches on the seat. I built a nice system for a regular customer of mine with a single 10", and two amps. I can scan and send picks if you like.

The most recent shop that I am sidelining at does alot of 6.5" jl subs. I heard 2 in a viper last week that sounded at least like a 10". They shared about one cu ft and if the plexi window was covered, you would have never guessed what was there....

Thanks a lot for all your help guys.

Now I am considering trying the Audiobahn 8....
Do you think it would provide a decent amout of
bass at about 300W RMS inside the tiny cab of
a Ranger?

Also: what is a good brand of amp to look into
for one 8" autobahn sub?
Ideally I guess I'd like to run a class D amp,
pushing around 300W at 2 ohms.

- Thx again

Another choice could be the kickers L5 or L7 series, they can handdle alot of power and they sounds like nothing else. They make some nice 8 inchers. The S8L7 goes down to 28 Hz with 450rms and 900 peaks. You can check it at :

http://www.kicker.com/ShowPage.cfm?filename=l7solosub.html&menu=SUBWOOFERS

Also I found this site for you wich has a decent price:

or you could get it at ebay for around 115 plus s&h. Mi knowledge on boxdesing is not that well so i dont know if ull be able to fit it on the ranger, but if doable...ill think you'll be pretty impress with its performance.

As far as am amp for that sub, considere these:

1. US Acoustics: USX600D Amplifier - 375x1 @ 2ohm (watts RMS) (only 20amp fuse rating!) $174.99!

2. JBL BP300.1: http://ikesound.com/product-product_id/148 $130.00, 300+ RMS @ 2 ohms

3. Kicker: http://ikesound.com/product-product_id/641 $230.00, 400 RMS @ 2 ohms

4. HiFonics: BX 500D Amplifier - 500x1 @ 1ohm (watts RMS) 250 RMS @ 2 ohms $399.99

As you can see, there are several options to play out in that power range. The JBL is by far, the best buy and very dependable. The USX amp would be a good choice as well. You can look at Kenwood, Sony, RF and a few others, but they are more expensive and not as value oriented.

Any other commentd there guys?

I would not do any less then a single 10". I have had a single 10" and two 8"s in previous rangers and like the 10 better. An 8 leaves me wishing for more...

Is there a way to post pics on here walt?

lol i read this and forgot i just put an 8" sub into the trunk of a friend of mine. it's 188 rms, it's all home stereo stuff, the amp, and sub both, it's running speaker level inputs off his stock radio, the box they have for the sub is perfectly made for it, has to be with home stereo, his one 8" feels more powerful then both my 1000 watt rms 12".... with only an 8", doesn't sound bad either, my box is way too big though, 6.5 cu, supposed to be 5

the sub was from a logitech z-560 system, if u can only get an 8" get a descent one and make a box that's just perfect for it, the z-560 sub is ported btw

my friend is very happy with the bass of his car now, i was too actually, and it goes very low, if anything u could buy a sub from logitech, it's $200 retail for the whole thing, and u'd have the amp already in the sub, mine wasn't cause i took it out, i was gonna use it for something else lol, but for less then 200 probably u could get a pretty good setup, 5 channel amp btw, 53 rms to each front and rear, 188 rms to the sub, now that i think about it, i wish i had that amp working... u'd just have to get an inverter for it, that's not to much trouble, one from autozone or advanced auto parts works great, get the 750 rms one(1500 peak), it's about $100, all of it is able to power everything in your car, nicely too

kinda confusing probably, but i hope this opens up some options for you, and this will save space to, not sure if it would fit

here's the link for it from the logitech site http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm?page=products/details&contentid=5044&CRID=2&detail=2&countryid=19&languageid=1
