Loudest Subwoofer Set-up Using Audiobahn A1500HCT?

by BigJMan

I have a high-current Audiobahn A1500 HCT monoblock amp that pushes 2000 rms x 1 @ 1 ohm, 1000 rms x 1 @ 2 ohm, and 500 rms x 1 @ 4ohm.

What subs (I don't care how big, I can fit 15's easily in the trunk of my 92' Towncar, and if I move my spare-tire 18s+) would give me the most SPL w/ not less than average SQ?

I want to emphasize again that I'm going for mainly SPL/DB here, but then again I don't want something that will sound atrocious either.

I'd like to fully utilize my amp's ohm-load stability [atleast down to 2 ohms seen by amp, if the amp sees 4 it's a waste of power :)] That means that if I have to, I'm willing to stray from the norm in means of quantity of subs, and number of voice coils to get the most out of my amp.

I'm willing to invest a little more money in my subs this time, so don't be afraid to recommend some expensive brands if it comes to that.

What should I do/buy in the situation that I am currently in?

A pair of the GTi 15" subs may be a very good fit for your application in power handling, SPL and better than average SQ. If you go ported, this will net very potent bass.

http://www.justwoofers.com/Woofer_Pages/JBL/JBL-GTI.htm

These 15's are 3/6/12 ohm DVC's and a pair in parallel will net 1.5 ohms to the amp and ~1500 RMS to subs.

If you want to look deeper into JBL GTI, look at their website:

http://www.jbl.com/car/products/product_detail.aspx?prod=W15GTI&ser=GTI&cat=SUB

The other option I can think of is Audiobahn subs... 2/4/8 DVC. There are several Bahn subs that can take this power and their web site has box parameters as well.

These are lists from:
http://www.thezeb.com/caraudio/audiobahn_subwoofers.html

AW1206T 12" Subwoofer w/ dual 4ohm voice coils - 1100 watts RMS $ 278.99
AW1506T 15" Subwoofer w/ dual 4ohm voice coils - 1300 watts RMS $ 399.99

When wired in full parallel, you get a 1 ohm load and max power from that amp. The major issue will eventually boil down to power management. Not sure how much this amp will draw at full power to a 1 ohm load, but am sure you can get that detail from Bahn Technical.

Thanks Swez,

I'll check some of this stuff out.

Swez -

Alright, I've checked out what I'm interested in - that would be the Adire 15" Brahma and JBL's 15" GTi. Both subs tend to get overwhelmingly good reviews on various car-stereo sites (like carreview.com etc.), and both subs are going to cost me somewhere in the range of $350 ~ $425 dollars.

I found the Brahma 15 for $409.95 @ http://www.speedsound.com/tek9.asp?pg=products&grp=49 and I found the JBL GTI 15 for $359.99 @ http://www.justwoofers.com/Woofer_Pages/JBL/JBL-GTI.htm.

Is there anything else that I should take into consideration when trying to decide which subwoofer would best fit my application besides knowing that they both supposedly kick a** and have good SPL and SQ when installed properly?

Have you personally heard either of these subs, because I like to actually hear something before I buy it, but the only person I know that has 15s has 2 Pioneer IMPPs...they do hit pretty hard, he's the loudest person in my suburbia town....cause the norm is to be a prep w/ 2 12" MTX's in the cab of your Chevy S-10 purchased by mommy and daddy.........

If you have any more personal info these subs that would help me make a decision, I would greatly appreciate it.

have you heard any kicker solo L7s? can be had for prolly 225 of ebay for 15" model, 1000 watts rms. 2000 peak, i used to have the 12 inch models. they were extremely loud, probably as loud as my 15 inch comp vrs. that amp will push 2 15s quite well. and i gurentee it will blow your buddies 2 pioneers away. im not tryin to push you away from anything but i like the way they sound. its your money and maybe the other sub are better havent heard either one of them. good luck.

Yes, I have several friends that are using the Adire Brahma and I neglected to mention them due to the high cost and Voice coil option. But their performance is astounding with adequate power and the right enclosure. These are 1/2/4 ohm DVC and the best you can do is a 2 ohm load with a pair. The subs are rated @ 1600 RMS per sub, so not the best use of your power amp choice.

JBL... I am very familiar with the Pro line models and the GTi is patterened off the Pro line designs that are so familiar to Professional Musicians and Sound guys. These mentioned are 3/6/12 ohm DVC's and you'll get most of the amp power available from that amp.

Thes best match for your specific amp is a 2/4/8 ohm DCV. But to get the most from the amp and subs, 1000 watts RMS per sub is your target range. That's why I listed the Bahn subs noted.

Any of these mentioned before will do very well, in the proper enclosure design. Are you thinking ported or sealed?

Comments?

Well my I started my system with 2 12" Rockford Fosgates (~150rms each) in a sealed box, then I bought some crappy Mobile Authorities 12s in a sealed box (I don't want to talk about it, I'll get very depressed.....), so to answer your question I guess I would be willing to try going ported, I know I have the room in my trunk, and I know it will get loud. My only concern is that I'll get a bunch of poopy "port noise". Is this a big problem, or is this not really a concern if the box is built properly for the subs?

I have another relatated question to this discussion, have you heard/have any opinions on Pioneer IMPPs, I know that everything that's been suggested in this forum so far probably puts out more, like "compvr15s" eluded to.

ive heard to 15 inch pioneer subs, not sure the model number and they were pretty loud. they were runnin of an mtx 500d. i was suprised and the loudness but it was in a hatchback so that helped some too. one of his was messed up too his 6x9 box fell on it and cracked it, so he used clear silicone and cover it, it was like 10 inches long so i bet it woulda been a lil louder if that crack wasnt there. good luck

The Pioneer Premier 12" is a potent little cuss. It uses IMPP technology as well, but I have never heard them. My guess, they are made specially for Pioneer as a SPL Comp class sub. They do not list a 15" sub in this line on their website. If you wish to look at them, look here:

detail/0,,2076_4061_35327,00.html

Another sub I have run into is from Lightning Audio. A 15" DVC 1/2/4 ohm Compitition sub. Lower price than most we've discussed so far. HERE: http://www.thezeb.com/caraudio/
lightningaudiostormsubspecs.htm $307.00 each

One of the guys bought a pair of 10's and he is well pleased with the results he got from same. I have not heard them...

PS Port noise is a funtion of the port area and velosity of the sound waves coming through the port. It the port(s) are properly designed, you will not have port noise or "poopy" bass issues.

The amp and sub are important components in the "great bass" equation. But the proper enclosure is the one that effects overall performance the most. This is why better brands will give you detailed box specs on their subs. (Adire, Bahn, Lightening, RF and JBL) They want you to succeed and not damage the woofers.
