I have a Kenwood excelon 1000 watt amp and I just have some crappy subs right now. They hit good with it but I want some good spl and sq. I though about buying some memphis reference 12s. Can you guys help me find some subs that will be good with this amp? thanx

PS What budget range do you have in mind here?

The model number is KAC-X520. The budget is somewhere between 200-400 for 2 12's

Good, this amp will give you ~500 watts RMS @ 4 ohms when bridged MONO. So, the subs that you can use are not going to be super expensive for SQL performance.

Am thinking Infinity, Alpine, JBL GT and maybe a few other sub to show you in that price and power range.

300 watts RMS per sub, 2/4/8 DVC design but you may find them out of stock or discontinued. MA audio is a solid performer and a very good price here.

Alpine DVC, 2/4/8/ohm, 300 watts RMS per sub

All these subs are from quality brand sub makers and in pairs, have enough power to take all your amp can deliver.

NOTE: I suggest that you bridge the ampp to MONO and wire the subs in a series/parallel configuration to get 4 ohms net load to the amp.

You may elect to run the amp in 2 channel mode and wire 1 channel to each sub, coils in parallel for a 2 ohm load. The amp will be fine at 2 ohms in stereo mode.

PS Your present box... do you have one and is it sealed, ported or at worst case... Band pass

PSS Memphis is a very well known SQ/SPL sub maker but I don't have any links to show you on this brand of sub.

Thanx alot for the suggestions. I have been trying to decide between the kappas and the memphis references. Right now I have a sealed hatchback box. also what box do you think would sound the best.....I have heard that the ported boxes are the best for spl.

Swez on 10/11/2003 23:56:51
Yes, a well designed ported box that matches your subs well, will net 3-5 more dB pf SPL in the ported range and can extend your low bass as well.

I understand that Memphis makes some very quality gear and I would not shy away from them if you can get that at a price within your budget. The Infinity Kappa or Perfects are a good all arround SQL sub. They blend well with most systems and again, the right enclosure is the key.

You may have to get some additional details ( a web site for Memphis) and I can look up the Infiniity details if you like. There is a computerized program called WinISD that helps plot various parameters of a sub to get optimal performance for SPL, SQ or a balance of the two.

I have not used it to date, but it will model pretty close to what you can expect, when you plug in the Thiel/Small parameters and other requested variablles. Then it spits outs graphs and such to help design the best choice enclosure for your application.

PS Sealed enclosure tend to control sub cone excusion well as this is a fully pressurized box. Better subs having a low Fs (<30 Hz) work well in sealed boxes, just not as loud as ported will do. Le SPL, but good SQ in sealed boxes. (a typical 12" will do well in 1.0 - 1.50 cf sealed) I shoot for the mid point (1.25) to get good low bass, but avoid subs hitting X-max at too low of power inputs.... pretty complex scenario here. Especially when getting into higher power ranges.

I forgot to ask you about the kenwood excelon db+ 12's. Are they any good??

Swez on 10/12/2003 11:48:37
Fair sub for low power bass applications, but not anything in the same class as the subs mentioned above. The dB+ series is an older product line and Kenwood make very good electronics, but the subs are over priced, under powered and less performance than other products noted above.

Perhaps the newer sub are better than Tornado or dB+ series and can take more power, have DVC voice coils and better performance, but the prices are not inline with performance in many cases... even if you can get them cheap through connections.
