Hey guys, I haven't used this forum for a while, I'm glad it's in business.. I currently have an Audiobahn Amp that pushes 1 x 500w RMS @ 4 ohm, 1 x 1000w RMS @ 2 ohms, and 2000w RMS @ 1 ohms. [I have proper wiring in my car (2-gauge, monster fuse and block, etc.).] I'm pushing 2 mobile authority 12"s that are hooked up so they each receive 500w RMS (the amp sees a overall load of 2 ohms). I've learned from other people and from this forum that mobile authority is utter sh*t, and that is probably why my output is less than desirable (I would have to build a ported box like twice as big as the one I have right now, filled w/ 50% "polyfill" to comply w/ recommended specs). Simply put, I think I need to invest in some nicer subs. I've heard people that can get quite loud w/ just 2 12" subs, I know that I have the power, now I need the speakers. I was thinking that I couldn't go wrong w/ JLW7, Diamond Audio, Alpine Type R, etc. If I could get some experienced opinions on what my best choice of SPL 12" subs for the enclosure size and power ratings listed above would be, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Replies (6) Swez on 10/9/2003 17:19:09 Nice to see you back BJM.... It's not clear to me if you are looking for a pair of 12's or just one? I assume you are looking for a pair? There are a number of great subs that can meet that criteria and knowing what the total ohm load you need will be a factor here. Seems like you may have a High Current amp here... yes? Model number would help on amp... A1500 HC? How much of that power (2000 W @ 1 ohm) do you really wish to tap into? Swez PS Do you have a budget figure in mind? No sense showing you a $300.00 sub if you are not in that range. BigJMan on 10/10/2003 19:04:50 Thanks for the quick reply - I have one A1500HCT amp and (although I'm not using it right now, I also have a A2801T - 200 w rms x 2 @ 4 ohms, and a A2401T - 100 w rms x 2 @ 4 ohms) In case you were wondering, I installed Audiobahn ACX interior speakers....and was disappointed to say the least...but that's another subject. Right now I am just looking for the loudest subs that can possibly be pushed by my A1500HCX amp, and guess what - I blew my Mobile Authorities big time yesterday...they both cracked and were ripped new ones (as in holes) by giving them their recommended power by means of my Bahn amp for 3 hours straight. So actually, I don't really care what subs I purchase next, I just want to make sure that they are good quality, won't blow, can take the power I'm going to give them, and are 'freakin' loud. My budget is less of a concern right now, just give me some recommendations for top-of-the-line to right-below speakers and I'll be happy. Because I've decided that all along w/ my install history I've really just been going for DB, maybe I want 15s instead of 12s? If it's not too much trouble would you mind recommending a few of each? Thanks for your time, this site is really has a good thing going for it. BigJMan on 10/10/2003 19:18:33 Oh yeah....I'd prefer to stick w/ 2 subs, that is unless I could somehow get more output w/ one. Swez on 10/10/2003 20:36:49 Have you ever heard of Adire Audio's Brahma series subs? These are beasts and can easily take 1000 watts per sub. Come in 12's and 15's as well. Very potent sub! Have a look: http://www.adireaudio.com/mobile_audio/drivers/brahma_series.htm Not a cheap sub, but if you have the amp and want to pound out the bass w/o fear of blowing cones and voice coils... this is one to consider. 1/2/4 DVC sub Also: http://www.respl.com/flash_index.html A tough site to navigate, but the XXX, and hc series are very high on the list of high performance subs. Not sure about price here though. Also, what's the issue with your Bahn full range speakers? Spalin more pls? Finally, there's always Bahn subs too... AW1206T 12" Subwoofer w/ dual 4ohm voice coils - 1100 watts RMS $ 278.99 AW1506T 15" Subwoofer w/ dual 4ohm voice coils - 1300 watts RMS $ 399.99 Here, you can get the full 2000 watts from your amp with these subs. Depending on your enclosure design the Bramah 15 or XXX will take the job using a 2 ohm load or 1000 watts . To get the most from your amp, a 1 ohm load is desired net. That means a pair of very strong 2/4/8 ohm DVC's in full parallel. Once more I can think of that someone bought and say they are awesome...: http://www.thezeb.com/caraudio/lightningaudiosubs.html X1.15.VC2 15" Subwoofer w/ dual 2ohm voice coils - 1000 watts RMS $307.99! If you go with a 1/2/4 ohm DVC, you can wire them in series/parallel for a 2 ohm net load... only 1000 watts RMS, but that's all I can think of that can meet your amps' power capability... am more an SQ guy and some SPL. Swez BigJMan on 10/10/2003 21:26:34 To answer your question about Audiobahn, I used to think that everything Audiobahn was the sh*t, but I've become more knowledgable from personal experience that this is not the case. I hooked up 2 ACX693s, the best 6 x 9 Audiobahn makes, w/ an Audiobahn amp supplying the right amount of power (yes I know that Audiobahn rates their interior speakers in pairs), and with the supplied crossover, and the speakers sounded descent low volume, but ****ted out and clipped at high volume. I know this because my amp has a clipping meter, and it was pegged. Also, I'm certain I had them hooked up right because there's only 3 connections on the Audiobahn crossover - + - tweeter, + - woofer, + - power (from amp). So after checking all the connections, wiring, and settings I concluded that Audiobahn makes sh*t speakers......many other people have told me that their amps are great, but their internal speakers are Wal-Mart quality. The guy's at Circuit City said that my speakers were crapping out because of the "crossovers", which doesn't help. I hate to b****h like that, it's just like I can't catch a break when it comes to caraudio...I guess I need to research what I buy like crazy before I get it, that's why I'm trying to use this forum. Swez on 10/11/2003 00:32:45 Yeah, I get the picture... actual results did not meet your expectations... but if the amps were clipping badly, that's mush of it and having LP filters migh help a lot as well as changing a few settings on your HU may prove to solve the answer that's missing. Actually, I am finding the Bahn amps to be pretty decent for the price. I also have a pair of Bahn plates I a planning to install fpr rear fill soon. These only have 4" mids, but my subs will handle the rest. However, if you really want to step up and not go broke, can try the CDT CL-61a (6.5" comps) where the 6x9's are now. Much better speaker and quality crossover too. At $150.00/ set, 90 watts RMS each, you can fit them into a 6x9 opening with some minor mods. Look here: http://www.thezeb.com/caraudio/specials_speakers.html Any subs you see in the list that make you interested? The 1.0 cf is a tad small for deep bass in a 12" sub... most like 1.-1.5 cf sealed or almost double that if ported. Check em out and them come back with your comments.
