I have a '98 Chevrolet Malibu. When I bought the car in March, the owner before me had a 2000 Sony Explod CDX-C7000X (remote included) with Sony Explod 6 x 9 speakers already installed. They chose not to keep these. This was handy for me because that meant that I wouldn't have to go out and buy everything myself. Nothing has gone wrong with the deck until about 2 weeks ago. I now find that when I turn on the radio, no sound will come out unless I turn the volume all the way up. When I turn it to the CD, everything sounds great. I would be quite greatful if someone could help me out. Thanks.

are all the speakers running off the deck, or is there an amp in there?

Try pulling the radio out and seeing if the antenna wire is securely plugged into the back of the deck. It sounds like the HU is getting a weak signal from the antenna.

Yes, clean your antenna lead in wire to the HU and also at the antenna connection point and see if that improved you FM signal and performance.
Some light sanding or a wire brush should do it and maybe a light coat of WD-40 lube to preven additional corrosion or oxidation on the leads.
This is common in older cars or cars with high milege, but if a trunk mounted antenna, some moisture can get into the lead attach plug and cause these kinds of problems.
