FROWN
Owner of a '96 Chevy Blazer. Friend installed a Nice HU (Alpine--CD text,CDA-7863). {It's the one with the control knob on the left and blue booster button}. Hooked up to a 150amp with 1- 10"" Sony XPlod. It plays fine, but I just want to make the connects good and tight. Main Problem: HU shuts off when engine shuts down, and all settings return flat. CD has to be restarted. Friend said something about a "memory wire". I'm new at this and can't quite figure out what this is....Am capable of removing HU and tracing wires, he said something about the deck's memory had to be hooked up to battery....Is that true? He has the red ground, and a small remote wire, but it still has to be turned on when starting up. Hope you can help....Any comments appreciated....But remember, I'm a newbie at this stuff, don't wanna blow anything up!!!

Normal wiring for most Aftermarket HU's:

RED = ACC/IGN hot lead (only active when key is in ACC or engine running)

BLACK = ground to body pan

YELLOW = Constant 12 volts from battery for station memory and presets

BLUE = REMOTE feeder to amp

BLUE/wt. stipe = Power antenna feed

Orange = Dimmer feature on display attached to dash light power lead

That's all I can think of... maybey ttocs can pick up the rest...

It sounds like he missed wiring the MEM (yellow) to the battery or one of the hot taps that is always on. I think the Cigarette lighter is always on, could use that.

Thanks to Swez for the prompt reply.......

I'll break it out again and look for a Yellow Wire. If I don't see one, I guess I'll have to find one and run it.

I'll let you know how it goes. Especially from the DIY's POV.....

cigarette plug usually comes on with ignition too. best to use a multimeter and find a wire which is live when the key is off and on, then you are sure. the memory wire only draws a little bit of current so almost any wire will do. it sounds like both the yellow and red wires are connected to a switched power supply, coz i know at least the old alpines only work when both have power. this means you will have to cut the yellow wire off of where it is now and splice into a full time live wire. hope that helps!

gm's cig lighter is constant and will have the orange wire on it. The switched wire is yellow in gm...
