sub mounting

I wanted to do that spare tire install, but i think i want to do it different. If i find a free air sub, and mount it upside down in the trunk, cut out like 3 ports about 3 inches round, will that work? are there specs for mounting subs upside down? Could i do this with the audiobahn flame q sub? it's looks so kick ass.
Thanks a lot
(Just a reminder, this site kicks ass and thanks for answering my annoying questions, it's greatly appreciated!.)

Free air subs are not the best chioce for good SQ or SPL. Not enough pressurization to manage cone excursion and high distortion values are likely.

Does it work? Yes, but not very well. Stick with your original plan if possible or build/buy a box, suited to your choice of sub.

Port if you demand lots of low bass. But sealed is a good all around balance for most guys. If you like RAP, ported makes sense. If you like Rock, Techno and other fast bass response material, go sealed.

yea, but it looks so cool. LOL
Thanks for the advice, i'll stick with the original plan.

You can do it... just stick to your original plan as having an inverted sub will impede your cargo space. Some say they think it looks cool, but exposing the back of speaker to cargo storage is iffy at best!

Once you get the well preped, all will be hidden and you'll have a degree of steath that is good for many reasons.

Stay on plan A... you'll be glad you did when done!

and having an inverted sub doesnt really do anything, its just for looks, it doesnt change the performance of the sub at all.

Actually, inverted subs do change the performance as most of the mass of the driver is outside the enclosure. So, the size of the enclosure can be a tad smaller when you remove sub displacement factor in the enclosure calculations. (assuming we get that deep into enclosure designs)

However, if the sub maker had designed the sub for inverted applications, they would reference same. I have yet to see a sub maker that advocates this type of install method.

well, it may change the performance, but that just depends on the situation, in most cases, it isnt going to make a significant amount of change.

Yep... what Blitz said, is good enough for me too. It depends a little, but there are other drawbacks.... mainly damage potential to subs with baskets and wiring exposed. Also, if a thief can see it.... it's gone!
