tweeter location

Just got my CDT 6.5 components in and am wrestling over where exactly to mount the tweeter. I have made the brackets out of mdf for the drivers. I went ahead and cut out the door panels and mounted the nice new grills that came with them. I will be screwing the grill frame directly through the door panel and speaker mount holes directly into the mdf bracket so there shouldn't be any vibration here. My vehile was set up great the door panel has just the right sized perferations to where it looks very professional the way I installed the grills. OK.... so now to my question!

I want to mount the tweeter high up on the door. I know that one should mount the tweeter as close as possible to the driver, but if I mount it down by the 6.5 driver it will be in line and pointing directly at the seats. There is a perfect spot at the top of the door -mounting here will have the two tweeter separated from its driver by 17" center to center. Does anyone see a problem with this?

I am thinking about buying CDT's image enhancement tweeters as well and mounting them up on the dash later. The crossovers I was going to moung interior in the door panel.

One last question.. the very top of the door panel where I wish to mount the tweeters is angled/moulded where I can place them to fire toward each other slightly downward at the dash or directly facing the driver/passenger respectfully. Anybody have any input here?

I just though I would ask the peoples with experience before I go cutting these holes. The door panel can be covered... once the tweeter holes are cut there is no changing my mind. Thanks in advance...

oh ... p.s. Got that nasty dent fixed and am now in the process of building a box to house two 10's in the back under the seats and pour some more money into my truck!

I think you should put them where it's easiest to achieve what you want to achieve. You might sacrifice some SQ by putting them up high, But if you have to go through a ton of mods to get them where they should be, and you dont have the time or recources....... they will sound fine where youre planning on putting them. Even better if you have a swivel flush mount.

Although i would definitely check to see how loud the tweeter is and turn it down (if need be) before you bury the crossover and put the door back together. they may be a bit loud because they are up high.

A little experimentation is in order here. You can do some temporary mounting tests to see (hear) where they sound best before you permanently mount them.

Most guys us 2 sided foam tape and this allows you to move tweeter to several possible locations, drive it a few days and then try a different loacation. The one that sounds best in the end, is the loction to use. Then hide you wires and install the tweeter there.

As for aiming the tweeters, most like aiming them at targets above the driver's head where most dome lights are located. If you aim them directly at your head, they may "beam" and sound too harsh of out of balance. Best if you can mount them a few degrees above your head so that beaming is not an issue and you get a nice balance of highs and mids in the front stage.

Like this: / O \ not like this... ----> O <--- The "O" represents your head.

That's a great drawing Swez.

What I typically do is get some fishing line, and connect it to the dome light. Then I run it down to the area I'm looking to install at, and eyeball the angle to follow the fishing line.

It hasn't let me down yet.

Actually Tray, you have a very cleaver idea there. The fishing line gives you a good visual and knowing the dispersion angle of the tweeters will help determine the right places to install you tweets.

Most tweeters can give good sound at 25-40 degrees of listening angle. Too much angle and you are out of the sweet spot. To little an angle and you get blasted by beaming tweeters.

NOTE: Since high frequencies are "VERY DIRECTIONAL" , you want to stay away from beaming the tweeters at your head. It should look more like this pattern:

< O> = a wide dispersion pattern (good)
---->O<---- = a beaming pattern (bad)

But why would you want the one on the right so close to your head?

Sorry Swez, just being very synnical today. Bad day at work.

It's not really closer physically, but sometimes adjusting the gain upward to the right front channel will offset the distance between L & R channel apparent SPL.

Naw... just partly kidding as that was a typo... missed a space... LOL

Tray, sorry you had a bad day at work.... could be worse, like more than 27 million in the US that don't have jobs at all. There are
~ 95,000 people per month that get the ax and lose their jobs. This trend started in 1999 and has been a steady trend since.

US labor statistics indicate unemployment at 6.2% nationally. But they don't count the millions who have exhausted their unemployment benefits and have taken meager paying jobs to make it through. They'll get the picture sooner or later though... especially when the tax man cometh up short for the 3rd year in a row.

PS Just wanted to keep you guys up on current events. I would not want to be in President Bushs' shoes right now... I like him and think he is a very honest man, but what a mess he is walking through now. God help America as we are foundering on the rocks of many perils.
