First of all, thanks SWEZ for the quick reply and great advice in response to my first post on this forum ("Local shop's advice..."). I did some more research after I read your reply, and now I see what you mean about the inferior nature of the system that my local shop was recommending (2 JL Audio 12W0s and a Rockford Punch 301S amp). GRIN I'm very interested in the JBL 600.1 class D mono amp that you told me about. But now I have a different dilemma. Which would sound better in a ported enclosure with 1.5cf/sub: Two 12" Shiva Mark III subs ($250/pair) or One Elemental Designs E12A22 sub ($295). THINK I've heard from several sources that the ED subs are higher-end than the Shivas. The price difference wouldn't be much between putting one ED or two Shivas in a ported enclosure...except for the fact that I'd need more power for the ED than for the Shivas, right? I understand that the E12A22 needs between 500 and 1400 RMS. So, would you still recommend the JBL 600.1 if I go with one ED sub? Or even TWO JBL 600.1 amps running to the one E12A22 sub (or is that even possible?) I'm assuming that one 600.1 will only push the ED sub to about half of its potential, which is not good, right? What about a JBL 1200.1 (just as high quality as the 600.1?) I also found out that I told you the wrong size for the speakers in my front door. They are 5", rather than 3.5", so that means I could install 5.5" or 6.5" components without too much modification, right? I'm thinking about Infinity Reference comps... any suggestions for other brands? Also, SWEZ, I appreciate the advice you gave me on making my own box, but I don't have the tools or the know-how for that, so I'm going to have to let the shop handle that (I should have mentioned that on the first post...my bad). So much for my $600 budget, huh? FROWN Another factor is that the Shivas would require a much bigger box than one ED sub, right? My local shop also mentioned Diamond Audio subs (and it seems like someone once told me that they have some kind of "guaranteed not to blow, or they'll replace 'em for free"-type-warranty, but I'm not sure that this is the same company that I heard about back then...) Do you know anything about this company? And how do their subs compare to the Shivas and the ED? Please let me know what you think about all this... Thanks again! USFLAG Replies (1) Swez on 09/24/2003 06:59:02 E-Design makes some very nice subs. They can take lots of power, have great low end in small enclosures and a single sub in sealed or ported box will definitely save space if that is an issue. I cannot determine what the SPL level for this sub will be at a given power input, based on the site data I have reviewed. However, ED recommends 300 - 1000 watts max input per sub. So a 1200.1 is a bit much for a single ED sub. Amp is of same design and quality... just higher RMS power and draw lots of amps as well. A 600.1 will drive a single ED sub just fine. Read some of the reviews and not helpful either.... but from what I see in the overall reviews by reputable writers... they are all positive as well. Personally, if you want a high SQ driver and power same with the JBL 600.1, this is a good choice. Yes, the Shiva's are a bit cheaper... and they too have excellent SQ and go very low in a modest sized enclosure. If sealed, looking at 1.0 - 1.5 cf/sub and 300 RMS to each sub is plenty to power them to adequate SPL as well. Diamond makes great subs as well. I don't know about the "no blow" warrantee mentioned but would think that any sub maker that makes that claim is asking for trouble. If the install is incorrect, box is not as specified or too much RMS power, any sub will blow eventually. Finally, about enclosure constuction... sealed is the easiest enclosure to build. Ported enclosure are not much more difficult if you have the port specs and a good blueprint on panel cut sizes and assembly techniques. If you have a good Home Center nearby (or a lumber yard) They can cut the panels to size for you at a modest fee and then you can assemble same for a lot less than most web based box suppliers will charge for a quality enclosure. The hardest part on building your own box is having a good circle cutter (Roto-Zip or routerw/ circle cutting jig) to get perfect hole size for the sub. The rest is just glue and screw. Covering the enclosure is a bit tricky if you have not done one before... but this is not too hard to dry-fit the fabric, trim and glue as needed fopr a nice finioshed look. If you have a buddy that has woodworking tools and skills to cut straight and squared panels, this makes the process much more enjoyable. Up to you! Swez PS There are so many great subs out there to choose from (and a lot of dogs too). But all three mentioned will satisfy most guys that are not doing SPL comps or extreme SPL applcations. It really depends on your budget, available space and the enclosure being well matched to the drive you choose. PSS If you do choose to go ported, the JBL does not have subsonic filtering. You can buy them and install inline easily and for ~$30.00 a pair. Made by Harrion labs and once you have figureout the port tuning to use (30-38Hz is good), then I can show you what filters to buy and where. Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
