Amp Cutting Out

Hey, installed new system in my car (with the help of the board), everything sounds great except that the sub amp keeps cutting out. After a minute or two it powers back up. I checked all the connections, ground, power, etc. Everything seems to be installed correctly. The amp is installed under the drivers seat and gets very hot to the touch.

Is it possible that it is overheating and after cooling it comes back on?

Does the amp completly pwr off, or does the sound just cut off. Where is the gain on the amp set? It should not be above 2/3 full.

Looking at the connections is not enough, you need to use a meter. A connection can look solid as anything we have seen, but still not work.

We had a extended cab nissan in the shop for a big system. It had a blow through and 3 amps in the bed. It kept cutting off as well and all connections looked rock solid. The voltage at the amp however was 9 volts. He had grounded it to the actual frame of the truck to ENSURE it was solid. Turns out the frame was isolated from the body, and was not grounded.

The amp completely powers off, light goes out. The gain is probably set around 3/4, so I'll turn it down. I have a voltmeter, so I'll check that as well.

Get back to you tomorrow.

Thanks.

Check the REM voltage as well with your VOM...if you lose 12 volts here, the amp will shut off too.

That sub... 4 ohm SVC right, 400 RMS? I assume you have the amp bridged as well?

Most likely, you have a loose power connection, poor ground or a iffy REM connection. If you have constant voltage to the power lugs when the amp shuts off, may be heating up a tad too much and need a bit more cooling. MTX amps can run hot when they are pushed too hard... keep your bass boost low or off as these push the amp into clipping and over current as well.

Swez,

Not sure about the SVC, noobie, but it the specs list 3 ohm Re. I do have it bridged.

I thought it was the ground at first and stiffened the ground, but the problem persists. I tried wiggling the power and the REM to see if I could get it to cut out, but they didn't appear to be loose. I'll check again and check the voltage at the REM.

Will overheating turn the amp off? If so, this doesn't seem good for the amp.

SVC = Single Voice Coil
Re of 3.0 ohms is common for a 4 ohm SVC sub.

Heat buildup of the amp can cause the amp to go into thermal protect mode and shut down to cool. If there is limited air space to cool the amp or the amp is oriented in such a way as it does not release heat well, it can shut down as well.

Finally, if the gains on the amp are set too low, (sensitivity too low) the amp will produce excess heat and same deal... shuts off. If the ground is not a good bare metal ground site, the amp can lose voltage and draw more current which also will overheat the amp.

My first pioneer amp constantly went into temperature protection mode (thats what i get for trying to run a sub and two speakers from a 300 watt amp i suppose), but only ever did this when i had the volume right up. Do you have the problem with yours regardless of how hard you are working the amp? Does playing it at low volumes stop the cutting out? Test it. This might atleast tell you whether the reason for the amp cutting out is overheating or something else.

Jarrod.
