96 Explorer new radio power antenna question

I have a 96 Ford Eddie Bauer that needed an updated radio with Ipod inputs. I purchased a Pioneer - 50W x 4 MOSFET Apple iPod-Ready In-Dash CD Deck with MP3 Model: DEH-2100IB at best buy.

My truck has a premium JBL stereo. 4 speakers and a sub in the rear side panel. It also has a power antenna.

They got it installed but.
1. They said they could not use the sub, so I just have 4 speakers.
2. The power antenna does not go down when I shut off the radio, it only goes down when I shut off the car. With my old radio the antenna would go down with the car running. Very useful in a carwash.

I am wondering if the antenna could be made to work as it did before. If I listen to the new radio with the car off the antenna does go down when I power it off. It just does not go down if the engine is running. Seems like it could be made to work.

They said the new radio 4x50 watts is more powerful than the old but it sounds a bit anemic without the sub. I was thinking maybe they did not hook the + - up to the speakers correctly. In the old days if you had reverse polarity the speakers would not sound as loud. I don't know if that's the case with the equipment.

What can I do to get the sub working?
If I can't use the original sub could I get an aftermarket amp and use my old crappy sub speaker? I don't care if its not a great speaker just wanted the low end filler of some kind, it does not have to be great.

Thanks for any help.

just curious, what did you pay for the install? This is all BS that they can't use the sub and I am confused about the power antenna. If I remember correctly the sub should have its signal fed in from the rear speakers and as long as they connected and the amp turn on wire on the harness is connected it should play as normal. Where did you get this done at?

Best Buy did it.

The system is a JBL premium. It has 4 speakers plus a sub.
The system is strange in that the radio is actually in the rear compartment, the front is really a tuner/tapedeck that controls the radio in the back.
There are two amps in the back. One does the 4 door speakers and one does the single sub. The sub has a plug in connector and not sure if the inputs are for low or speaker level.

there is some info on it. They have pics somewhere.

The install was going to be 50 then I had to buy wiring and some other kind of harness. Total was 150.00. And that was without the sub hook up. That also included the faceplate (23.00).

I want them to fix the antenna and maybe the sub. It would be easier to use the low level outputs of the new radio with a new amp. But not as cheap.

I hate that place. I worked there for a little less then 3 yrs almost 12 yrs ago now and I have refused to buy anything from them since. they treat alot of their customers badley and almost all of their employees.

You paid $150 for a radio install and they can't figure out the sub? The link you gave doesn't show the pics for me so I can't tell what they are doing with what harnesses. I own a 97 ranger and a 94 mustang so I am as familiar with the wiring as anyone(when I can see it). Do the pics show up for you?

This model HU has a single Blue/Wht stripe wire for outboard amps and power antenna functions. The power antenna up/down function is controlled by this wire. See manual, page 20)

If they connected the factory amps to this line but did not connect the power antenna too, this is why it's not coming down. (One drive through the automated car wash will ruin the antenna)

Since BB did the install, take it back and ask the Shop Mgr to have this corrected by one of their more experienced techs.

PS They may have to install a relay and additional +12 volt line with constant power to the relay and then feed all amps and power antenna off that new line.

The power antenna does word via the new radio when the car is off.

But if I have the radio off and start the car the antenna goes up just be having the car ON. Its like the cars ignition over rides the radio on/off button as an antenna switch.

OK, the installer took a shortcut and wired the power antenna to the ACC/IGN/RUN circuit. That makes the antenna go up and stay up while the key is in that position. It works, but one trip through the robo-wash will ruin this antenna as it is not designed to take that. There is a work around for it, so take it back and let them do it right.
