Hey i have a power bass asa 800 2-chanel amp hooked up with a memphis m3 500rms 12" sub. The sub keeps blowing because i think the amp puts out to much pwoer which is good i guess. The question is that i want to get a new 12sub and was thinkin alpine type x which is about 1000rms 3000watts and if i bridge it will it sound good and power the sub enough to where i would get alot of bass but not enough to blow it out. And also is bridging it going to give me the most power? It says itll give 800rms bridged which would be good im thinking because its 200 rms under the 1000rms limit the alpine type x has?? However, the enclosure design may/may not be the major contributor to sub failure. The box has to match sub specs with +/- 10% or sub failure will often result. How are the subs failing? (Voice coils fry, mechanicals fail, spider/coil separation, other?) Another thing subs cannot handle very well, high distortion and amp clipping. (Abuse) This amp is fused at 40 x 2. Depending on the actual voltage it's getting, it can deliver 800 watts RMS when bridged MONO. (Required load is 4 ohms) However, if the amp gain settings are wrong, one can easily fry a very strong sub with this amp. Say more about your enclosure. (Sealed or ported, dimensions of box and port size if used) Swez newB on 06/12/2009 10:27:30 Woofers usually don't fail because of to much power, rather they fail because of the quality of the power. When an amp sends a woofer a clipped signal, it creates much more heat than a clean signal and will pop a coil or burn a tinsel lead very quickly. Example: Vid i made showing Clipping http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfRkvRlvO1Y Rather than dumping money in to a more expensive sub, i would try and figure out your current settings first to make sure the same thing wont happen to the Type X even though your giving it 200w under rms. Also! Woofers are designed to play at certain power levels. Your 500w M3 may very well be louder and sound better than an underpowered Alpine Type X. This will cause you to try and get more from your amp causing another woofer paperweight.
