A Capacitor has 2 main functions.

1. It stores energy for short term durations
2. It filters/blocks low frequencies

Surge Caps store electrons and release them when bass demand is high. Unfortunately, they are not a cure all for most system applications as they cannot store enough prolonged energy to do much good. They recharge quickly. But they also discharge rapidly too.

As filters, capacitors pass mids and highs, but block lows. They are also used in a number of ways to connect/join one circuit section to another. The main thing to know about filtering capacitors, they act more like resistors that change with frequency. The lower the frequency, the more they act like high value resistors. (Good for passive crossover networks)
