i have a 12" alpine type-r running a 2 ohm load off the mrd-m500, which i should add is amazing. and i was wondering if it would be that big of a difference to wire up another 12" in parallel Replies (5) compvr15s on 09/16/2003 23:59:24 your doubling the air space movement, so yea its a big difference but its only like 3 db increase, but yes you will notice it. i started with one kicker l7 12" and i decided to get another ad its souded awesome till i blew the subs lol. i think youll be happy if you upgrade. but wait for the pros to elaborate more. good luck kingalpine on 09/17/2003 00:12:35 thanks a lot. i heard those solo-barics were awesome, how'd they treat your ears?? compvr15s on 09/17/2003 00:24:55 they were great for thier size but i think way over priced. right now i have 2 15inch comp vrs, kickers next step down from teh solo barics. and for the price/prefromace ratio id pick the comp vrs over the solo's anyday. can get like 3 or 4 12 inch compvrs for the price of 1 12inch solo unless ya buy off e-bay. kingalpine on 09/17/2003 00:57:38 u should always check ebay before buying retail, ur bound to get a better deal, even with shipping included. Swez on 09/17/2003 06:34:28 If you do add a 2nd sub and use the same amp, you have a wiring issue to confront. That amp is stable at 2 ohms (min load) If you ran a 2nd sub in parallel, the load will now be 1 ohm and the amp may reject that load by constant overheating and thermal shut down. This means wiring the subs for a 4 ohm load to stay safe on the amp, but half the output watts you now have, are being shared by 2 subs. So in this case, you'd actually be losing output by using 2 subs as noted... 1. Amp can supply 500 watts at 2 ohms 2. You have full power going to 1 sub now (~500 RMS) 3. Wired for a 4 ohm load, amp will net 250 watts output 4. Each sub gets 125 watts from the amp The net effect of using dual subs this way... going to lose more than 6dB of bass power net at 4 ohms load. If you added a 2nd amp and sub wired as now, this will net a modest increase in dB... ~+3dB. Does that extra expense warrant such expense? Maybe... maybe not. Only you can judge that outcome. The other option that is available to you, change to a larger amp that can do a 1 ohm load. Then add a 2nd sub as noted. The JBL 1200.1 is a class D Mono amp (~$300.00) and will do 1 ohm loads just fine. However, not sure which subs you have here, so you may run the risk of over powering them into oblivion... unless each sub can handle 500 watts + per sub. Think it over carefully before you jump. More amps or a larger amp will make the electrical system in your vehicle work much harder. Your present amp will pull about 50+ amps from the system. A pair will pull double that and a larger amp can really strain your ALT/BAT to its limits. See the trade offs here? Swez Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
