Audiobahn vs. Alpine

So I'm comparing the Alpine SWR-1042D Type R 10" sub to the Audiobahn AW1006T.

I can get them both for around the same price (~$100). I was wondering which sub is going to be more reliable and a better investment.

The sub will be getting hooked up to a 300 watt Kicker ZX300.1 and a pioneer HU. I have a box which is about .85cu which I would like to use but don't have to. The sub is going in the trunk of a VW jetta. I listen to rap and rock so the sub needs to be responsive to both types of music.

Thanks for the help

Good to see ya back at CK!

Hands down choice on this forum would be the Alpine sub! The box you have is within range for the SWR-1042D.

The optimal box specs, (0.60 - 0.65 cf, sealed) is just right for the Alpine as the sub displacement is ~0.05 cf. The usable range is 0.5 to 0.8 cf sealed.

The smaller the box, the tighter the bass will be, better power handling and less deep lows. The larger end of the specs will give slightly deeper lows, less power handling and possibly some cone whop at high volumes. (Premature X-max)

FYI: If you note cone whop, installing a few spacer boards will clean up that issue, after the sub is broken in adequately. If you need to add material to the box later, we can give you dimensions of boards to add as needed.

Nope I had a feeling that the alpine was the way to go given the name. But the price per watt of the audiobahn (which was almost double the alpine) was very enticing. Thanks for the help.

I should be doing the install soon now that it has finally warmed up. So I will let you know how it goes.

Audiobahn has not lived up to the hype and a test of time for many in the past few years. Crutchfield used to carry Bahn and dropped them from their sellling list for a good reason.

We don't know why in specific details, but if Crutch dropped them, we can be sure it was a combination of things they demand of vendors and that's good enough for this old-school Marketing/Salesman.

Quality, value, reliability, profit margins and cost to service returns and other product issues are key to a large supplier like Crutch. If that is not there, why offer the line? (And suffer the added headaches?)

I could go on, but there is no need to. Stick with a proven winner that has been a top 10 seller for many years. You'll be glad you did, even if this sub is a few dB shy dubious hype from Bahn.

Stay the course, (Alpine in this budget range anyway)
