hey guys i had a alpine head unit and alpine amp for my two alpine type r's well today i installed another amp for the speakers and a new alternator to have enough power for the extra load of 2 amps. well i put everything together and my head unit just skips turns on and off. can anyone help me out Replies (4) brandonaiello on 03/29/2009 18:46:39 swez on 03/29/2009 19:32:43 Double check your HU wiring to insure the power wires are connected solidly. (Soldering or crimp connectors here are best) As for skipping, heavy bass can make some CD players skip when you dial up the bass. Some guys have used padded insulation strips to help isolate the HU from the dash and skipping can be dampened this way. (Scotch brand insulating tapes work well in these cases) Also, if you have severe voltage drops from using larger bass amps, this can also cause your HU or amps to shut down. If the supply voltage drops below ~12.0 volts, some devices will shut off if they have "low voltage sensors" in them. Better amps and HU's have these circuits and you can monitor the dash voltage gage to see when drops are happening. Comments/Questions? Swez PS What amps do you have now, (Make & model #'s) and what amperage ALT did you use as the upgrade? You may need a stronger battery as well. Say more about your rig OK? daniel_c_culver on 03/29/2009 21:07:55 isnt when u put a new alternator u must put in a new battery? in out landrove we put in new alternator but kept old battery. it then made both items messed up and we had to replace them. swez on 03/29/2009 22:16:39 This depends on the battery age and how well it performs with your new install. Most lead/acid batteries last 4-6 years at best. As the years go by, a typical battery will collect excess oxides that sink to the bottom of the battery and eventually short out one or more cells. Once that happens, the battery will actually lose power storage ability and make the ALT work harder to recharge the battery. FYI: The BAT is simply a storage device to start the engine. When the BAT is fresh and healthy, it not only starts the engine, but will store reserve power as a storage tank too. But, if the BAT is on the fringe with age, it hurts the system and needs to be replaced. I've seen normal car batteries poop out in less than 2 years as well. A free "Load Test" will tell if the charging system is working properly or not. These are often free at most good autoparts stores. Swez Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
