Hi Everyone, i would like to buy new subwoofers for my car and some of the ones i have been looking at state that they recommend a ported box. the box i have now is sealed, and i don't want to buy a new one if i don't have too. Would there be a lot of difference in the sound between a ported box and a sealed box? Also, could i just modify my sealed box that i have now to make it ported, instead of buying a new one? Any help would be greatly appreciated. -Mike Replies (5) Buickman94 on 09/15/2003 17:03:11 There are a few different factors to cinsider here. Most importantly, what subs specifically are you looking at. Also, do you know the internal airspace of the box you have now? Is it single or dual chamber? If the subs you are looking at now will not work in the box you have, there are other options. mschrems on 09/15/2003 17:46:48 i was looking at a few different ones but leaning towards the Audiobahn AW1206T models. i think the internal airspace of the box is a little less than 1cubic foot per chamber(it is a dual chamber box). i planned on running 500-600 watts to each subwoofer. Swez on 09/16/2003 08:31:27 This sub can do ported or sealed and you can use the present enclosure with good results if it has an internal air space between 0.5 - 1.2 cf/chamber. The smaller the enclosure, the less deep bass you will get from the woofer. As you go larger in air space, the low bass gets better. You can get details on box specs from Bahn by clicking on the following links: 1. http://www.audiobahninc.com/frameset.html 2. Then click on the "2003" products box 3.Then click on the words.... "additional diagrams and info" 4. Now, look up your sub model # and click and Viola... your info will appear in an Adobe .pdf file. BTW... you can use a cheaper sub than the Flame Q series as these have more power handling than was mentioned in your post. Something in the 600-800 watts RMS range is plenty and will cost a bit less too. The AW1200Q is much cheaper and still handles 700 RMS, DVC (2/4/8) http://www.thezeb.com/caraudio/audiobahn_subwoofers.html You'll have to go back to the Bahn site for box recommendations to see what is recommended. Same steps as noted above... but may have to choose a different model year to find the specs on boxes. Swez mschrems on 09/18/2003 13:17:34 Thanks for all the help and recommendations Swez, I think I am going to get those subs you were talking about,i found a good deal on them :) -Mike Swez on 09/18/2003 17:11:02 You bet! When porting, consider the overall air displacement of that port as well. If you have 1 cf now, add sub and port, you may wind up with a very small internal airspace left for the sub to "breath". Bahn recommends a 1.5 cf internal with a port size of 3" dia. and 7.25" L. This nets a tuned box at 39 Hz. If you only have 1.0 cf now, am not sure what port size you will need to get decent bass in that small an enclosure. This is either a question to ask Bahn Tech directly or run calculations to determine what size port you can use in 1.0 cf that will still net below 40 Hz and low port velosity to avoid port noises. May have to make/buy a new enclosure here. If you stay sealed as mentioned earlier, 1.0 is right in the middle of the specs for this sub (AW1200Q) and can use what you have now. The 400 RMS per sub will still make a sealed woofer snort well and you can always change to a ported enclosure if you do not have enough low end bass.
