So, I got a couple problems :P First of all, I just got my 4 channel amp installed and 6.5" installed into the kick panels in front of the door. It's been sounding pretty great but I immediately noticed engine noise. So, earlier today I took out the cheapie RCA's I had in and put in some Zero Noise Street wire RCA's to no avail. the Noise is still there. I also tried a Noise filter directly into the Head Unit which did nothing. On top of the original engine noise, when shuffling around the RCA's I think I accidentally created a short. This has been a bit hectic so I'll outline my problems here. 1.) Engine Noise. How do you properly alleviate this? The noise filter has 2 RCA inputs and 2 RCA outputs and 2 small Ground wires (they seem like ground wires anyway) (Noise started with new install) High pitched noise when engine is revved, disappears when HU is turned off. 2.) What are the characteristics of a short? When approaching 80% of the HU volume the music stops playing while the Track continues to "play". The light on the amplifier flickers and the Voltage meter in the car's gauge cluster goes nuts for a few seconds. (just started when installing new RCA's) Help meeeeee. :) Replies (1) swez on 03/2/2009 03:25:19 Classic symptoms of a ground loop here Ender. You'll have to ground the HU to a bare metal location other than the factory harness. The other HU problem mentioned may be part of this as well. If the grounding line is NOT a true reference ground, the HU can/will do some strange things too. As a test, get a length of #16 gage wire and splice one end to the HU ground wire in the HU harness. Take the other end of wire and strip off 1" of insulation and run it out the passenger side window to the engine compartment to the battery NEG terminal. If the noise goes away, you are on the right track. The next step is to find a good ground inside the car, firewall or part of the motor that keeps your ground as short as possible and no noise.
