Front Speakers/Tweeter/HU Issue

ok here is whats going on. i got some new tweeters i wanted to hook up.

Boss Dome TW17 Tweeters. Nothing Fancy. (dont flame i know there cheap)

well i mounted the tweeters and ran wire to the back of my HU. they have built in cross-overs. i was ganna run them with my speaker wires on the back of my HU. well 1 problem was my tweeters wasnt blocking any bass at all. so i decided to unhook them for now and come here and ask were i should run them to.

then another issue came up. when i connected my speaker wires back to my HU. the bass on the front speakers was ALOT louder and more bass then my HU restarts everytime it gets to loud, well its seems like it atleast. but it restarts every single time. and i have no clue why. i have a Loud button on my HU, for more bass and when i turn it off its fine if i turn my volume up without it on i think at 14 my HU restarts but if i hit the loud it restarts right then and there. i pretty much gotta keep my loud button off and my volume down now so it wont restart.

what did i do? how can i fix it from restarting and were should i run my tweeters too?

whats the model # for the HU and speakers???

speakers could be too low of an ohmic load for the HU

mm HU is a Pioneer. im not sure of the model number.

i got 2 Sony 6 1/2 270 watts

and my tweeters are Boss micro dome t17 200 watt.

my front speakers work fine its just when i hook the tweeters up the tweeters sound awful and i lose all my sound quality ans bass quality when there hooked up and now my HU restarts if my music is too loud.

Welcome to CK! We don't "flame" new readers... we try to educate them.

These Boss Tweets are not a good match for what you have in the front doors now. They are probably very harsh, over-shadow the mids you get from the Sony 6.5" speakers mentioned and create instablitity loads for the HU amplifiers. It's best that a better quality tweeter is used in their place. Better still, a matched Component type 2-way and quality crossover system will help.

Also, the "loudness control" is a bandaid/automatic fix for the lack of low and high frequency boost at low listening levels. A well-designed loudness circuit will boost lows & highs at low power and as power is increased, that function tapers off. A poor design does not.

The "restart issues" mentioned are an uncommon complaint. Am not sure what you mean by that one. Can you explain it in another way so we can get a better handle on this one. (At the moment, it's like a COFFEE mug without a handle)

I am betting the restart issues is because the memory is being lost and its being set to factory defaults?? Is it losing your Radio stations?

callmechad on 02/23/2009 09:18:11
yeah im losing all my radio stations the whole HU itself restarts if the music or bass is too loud.

it sounds like your radio is going into protection mode to keep from blowing it up. By slapping them on the other speaker wires you have dropped the impedence of the deck to what is probably an unsafe level. It should not be too much of an issue to hook those tweets up to the deck but if it is shutting off at loud volumes it sounds as though it doesn't like it. Is it running hot? Are the Cd's comming out as if they are on fire?

callmechad on 02/23/2009 16:49:23
nope it dont run too hot. but yeah i lost alot of impedence from them. how else can i run the tweeters without losing any impedence and everything sounds smooth?

you will need an amp for that, or you can wire them in series and cut your power in half and loose bass from your other speakers.

You are probably taxing the amp on that deck badly now and while it is cool out you should be ok but when summer comes it will probably let the magik smoke out.

i took off the tweeters from the back the of my Hu i have another amp i can use. so do i run that the same exact way? how would i run the amp to the tweeters and have the power to them.

A well-designed crossover and well-matched mid/tweets are often the solution to getting balanced sound from such installs. In this case, your tweeter is very efficient compared to the door speakers. (+6dB?)

I suspect these may be Piezoelectric elements. The power rating for such a small package hints at that. If that is true, many amplifiers are not good at managing highly capacitive loads. It may say 4 ohms nominal, but Piezo designs are a different animal compared to silk or metal dome speakers. These may do more harm than good.

The Boss TW 25 is a better option here. (Silk Dome, 1" dia.) Think about that and maybe an amp as well.

Chad,

Would you mind outlining all your gear so we can get a better picture of what you have on hand. Knowing that, am sure we can put things in order so that you have a more balanced system when done.

Make and model #'s are most helpful here and the type of vehicle you are working with too.

Chad, I take it that these are older Sony speakers and sub?

I cannot find useful information on the xPlod speakers/sub or that Dual amp. However, it looks like the Sony 6.5" are 3-way coaxials and the sub is probably a 4-ohm, single coil, 12" sub?

From your notes, I take it that your are running the full range speakers off the HU amps and the sub is powered off the Dual amp?

Please comfirm,
Swez

PS What are the primary issues you wish to address on this install?
