Can't figure it out...

Hey guys, I'm trying to install a JVC CD receiver that I bought from the circuit city going out of business sale. I picked up a wiring harness and framing kit for my car (2003 malibu) and went to install everything myself today. I crimped all the wires from the harness I bought with the wires that came with my stereo, following the diagram exactly (battery to battery, speaker to speaker, ground to ground). When I go to plug everything in I can hear the stereo fire up, it makes a noise like it's ejecting a CD, but no display lights up when I start the car. However, If I press the display button on the receiver, it lights up, and when I put a CD in it lights up too but doesn't play anything. I can eject the disk just fine too. I can't turn the stereo on via the power button either, only the display button lights everything up. Any ideas on what the heck is wrong here? Is it the system itself?

Does it do this every time you turn on the ignition?

Well, it doesn't "fire up" as I described it every time I turn on the ignition, only when I first plus the wiring harness into it. After that, every time I turn the ignition on it appears as if the stereo has no power (it just does nothing), but if I press the display button or put a CD in it lights up just fine, proving to me it must have power. It just won't actually turn on or play anything, it will only light up.

what did you hook the red +12v switched wire to? I am fairly sure that the malibu uses a data bus system so there is no switched wire in the hrns. If you did connect it to another red wire, follow that pin through the hrns and see if there is a pin on the factory side. You will need to run a wire to either the ignition or the fuse box to get it a +12v switched wire if there is no wire on the factory side.

Ah, you're right! I just checked it and the ignition switch wire isn't making any kind of connection when plugged into the factory harness....there's no wire where it plugs in. So I need to run a wire from my stereos harness to what exactly in the fuse box?

From what I've seen, most people use either the radio fuse or cigarette fuse when wiring an amp. So, chances are it would be a safe bet to see if you actually have a radio fuse, and if so use that...Or the cigarette lighter fuse. :)
