Ender-who? 1977 Corvette

:) Long time!

I seem to come and go don't I? Either way, how are you guys? Victor, Swez, Mr.B? Still old? :P Just kidding, just kidding!

1 more semester till graduation; who feels like driving down to TN in December to sit in? :)

So, I got this new car.... 1977 Corvette as a bit of an early "graduation" present to myself and now that all of the general maintenance stuff is out of the way it's time to make the ride a little more enjoyable with a nice sound system.

The plan currently is 2 kick panels in the rear with 6.5"s and tweeters also built into the kick panels, and a very "well" designed optimum efficiency box for 2 12's, yes yes Swez I know.... it's WAY too much for this car but I'm going to do it anyway, because well.... I don't know, just because it's a challenge. :P

Either way, the main thing I'd like to get some advice or tips on... the Dash is designed for 4x6's and I'd like to get some 6.5's in there but the factory mounting bracket isn't looking very promising. Anyone heard of a 77 vette 6.5" dash adapter? or any intuitive ideas about how to get them to fit?

Just a review of what I've got to put in. :P

Kenwood 8452 4-channel amplifier
Directed Audio D2400, 1,200wRMS@1 ohm
2 pair CDT CL-61a's, 6.5' cones with 1" silk and titanium tweeters
Sony XPlod head unit

Optima redtop battery and soon to be a 200+ H.O. alternator.

Hey, you'll be looking a job soon buddy! Nice to see ya back at CK. Yes, we all getting older and those in the Great White North are having a bout with "Cabin Fever" too.

Your plan is solid and kick panels in this car, makes the most sense. As for subs, yes... that's a lot of sub for a car this size. I would think a pair of JL 8" woofers would be plenty here. But, it's your call.

Yes, Optima Ret and a H.O. ALT will be on the buy list as long as you keep that D2400 amp.

As for school, finish well and hope there are jobs waiting for you on the way out.

Yeah, kick panels in the back are a must but I'm looking looking to fix some 6.5's in the front dash which are designed to fit 4x6" ;x any ideas? Pics up later tonight.

Not really any ideas on the front dash. I can see 4x6" plates in the dash and 6.5" woofers in the lower doors if you see the space. That's about it. This would make a nice 3-way system in the front stage and some nice rear fill + subs in back are plenty for such a small interior space.

Other than that, it makes for a challenging set of passive crossovers or bi-amping the front channels is even better.

4x6" plates: HPF set above 250 Hz.
6.5" Door speakers: BPF 80 - 300 Hz.
Subs: LPF @ 80 Hz.
Rear speakers: up for discussion

most of the gm's I worked on barely had room for a average sized magnet on a 4 x 6, let alone a 6.5. If you have a good set of kick panels I would just scrap the top location and keep it simple as the airvents are normally directly below those top dash speakers. 2 12's should be just enough to blow out any weak spots in the fiberglass body.

With my car, it came with 6x8 speakers, and I made my own adapters from some random 1/4" board laying around...Just traced the old speakers, noted where the mounting points were, then cut them to hold the new speakers. If depth is an issue, you can do a few and stack them together, or make it with thicker material. Dunno if that would work in your case, but you can always try. :)

Ender,

Have you had the opportunity to pull a door panel and look at the depth available in the door panels? It would be great if you could install your CDT's in the front door or kick panels. (Disconnect the 4x6" speakers)

The other choice is custom kick panels to mount them as a set. This works good, but only if you have foot room on the driver's side. (Some cars don't allow much room for big feet ans a clutch pedal.

Haven't taken the panels off of the door, honestly didn't think there even was a space, even now if there is it will require a new panel with appropriate slots or some major modification, see picture here of door.

Kick panels are out of the question seeing as how little space is in the floorboards, see below.

And lastly here are a couple pictures of the place where I'm trying to fit the 6.5"s in that's supposed to take the 4x6. I guess I can always mark the mounting holes, cut the wood and make the circle in the middle big enough for the 6.5" to fit in and see if it will fit? Worst case a piece of wood is thrown away.

Tried to access your pics and could not get into the site???

What was Chevy thinking about when they designed the audio system for this 77 Vette? It was obviously not a quality music on this project.

the links don't work for me.

I was wondering about the kick panels to be honest and my back was hurting trying to imagine the position you will end up in while trying to glass them.

Putting a 6.5 in a 6x8 whole is not the same as putting it in a 4x6. maybe mounting some horns would be easier?

swez on 02/6/2009 22:29:03
Oh no... not horns here as they will rip your ears off and still have to figure out a mounting location for MB drivers and a complex filter network to balance the entire system.

Sorry ttocs... Horns of this size are cheap, low power, high efficiency and will sound awful w/o extensive EQ. Nope, cannot see that one in the plan at all.

The only other prospect I can see that would be expensive, time consuming and lots of labor, custom fiberglass door pods, for the 6.5" CDT MB drivers. The tweeters can be integrated there too or installed in the mirrow sail panels by the mirrors. That would be an extensive glassing project and some experienced hands on that part as well.

Thoughts?

Ahhh, see what you mean as all links worked this time.

The door pic looks like you might have a chance at installing the 6.5" speakers just in front of the door latch? You'll have to remove the panel and look for an opening in the door frame to see if the magnet will go through. Do you still have the grill covers that came with these CDT's?

As for the tweeters, it's looks like the top part of the panel, just infront of the pull strap might work? Flush mounting kit parts would make it look nice and clean.
