I have a 1996 1.6L 5spd Honda Civic i have found stock radio wire harness pic online but some of them are different! with the HU i purchased it has got to be the most annoying system to install a Freeway 2685 cd/dvd i had to wire my ignition,12v+ together or the HU would not turn on and i have no memory! I am about to go and buy 4 new speakers re wire everything but what about the memory the HU has no memory wire! i dont want to hook to much together! also the deck has a sub line one one though than it has front and rear rca's i hooked my rca to the rear pre out and i am gonna guess but the single sub line would be for a gain control? it was mentiond to hook my memory to 12v line does this mean to connect it with other wires? Josh Replies (24) swez on 01/30/2009 16:06:27 Hi Josh, pulling your hair out yet? (Hope not) All HU's have 2 power wires and a ground. One power wire goes to the ACC/IGN circuit. The other power line has a constant +12 volts to retain memory. The typical color scheme: Red is ACC/IGN (Power only when key in ACC or start/run modes) Yellow is BAT or Constant power for Memory presets Black is ground The four speakers are paired in like colors: Gray & Gray w/ black stripe are right front (The black is Neg) White & White w/ black stripe are left front Green & Green w/ black stripe are left rear Violet & Violet w/ black stripe are right rear Orange is ILL wire (Most use the manual control w/o this connected Blue is the power antenna and/or REM power combined Blue w/ White strip is REMote turn on for amps (N/A) Brown to parking brake switch Pink to Lamp In (Whatever that means???) (Not Used) These are the common wire callouts for most HU's made in Japan and elsewhere. Yours was made in China. Did you get an installation and users manual with this player? Here ya go. See page 12 for wiring details: http://www.freewaychina-na.com/manuals/DVD_2685_english.pdf Swez McCallum84 on 01/30/2009 18:05:37 yea its mostly the wire harness in my car... the HU wires are tagged.. but i have found different wire shematics over the net.. rite now i have no memory and when i wire the HU completly i either have it how it is rite now with no memory and the amp turns on with the ign Hu by pressing pwr on th HU itself still no memory.. a slight himm when the volume is turned dwn but no humm when the volume is turned to 0 i have been thinkin on returning the HU i try to plug in the I=Pod and it doesnt read... Dvd it says u cant play this function while driving and i wasnt driving.. trying to follow the manuel doesnt work i press the buttons they tell me and what is supposed to happen doesnt... Do you or anyone have a HU in mind that has usb, aux with easy install id like to find something with a nice screen to it but im only lookin to spend 200 -225 in total (canadian dollars) i dont need a HU with alot of the stuff mine has (back up camera hook-up , hook ups for additional lcd's im installing into a 96 civic i am going to purchase new speakers all around can i wire them all with new wires rite to the HU? swez on 01/30/2009 18:48:13 I take it you did not use an Stock/Aftermarket converter kit in this install. If you did, it makes wiring a no-brainer for ~ $20.00 It's a simple conversion harness that makes wiring aftermarket devices a breeze. I would suggest dumping this player and go for a well-supported version from Alpine, Kenwood or perhaps Panasonic. Get the wiring kit too so you don't have to figure out the factory harness functions. Hop on over to Crutchfield.com for some ideas and general prices, features and install info. You don't have to buy from them at retail prices, but you will get a feel for other options that Crutch believes are worthy of their offering list. FYI: Most DVD players have a defeat switch function that does not allow the DVD to work while driving. (Safety feature and the law in most US states) That's the brown wire feature on this player. It will not work if the parking brake is not engaged and wired properly. Also, your MEMory retention circuits will not work when tied to the ACC/IGN circuit. The Memory/Constant DC line, has to have a constant +12 volts from the BAT at all times to work correctly. Sometimes we can get that from the cabin fuse box, (BAT) or cigarette lighter too. Dave McCallum84 on 01/30/2009 20:30:44 thanky you im pulling this out tomorrow morning i planned to buy all new speakers anyways so i will get everything at once also a converter for my car and whatever HU i purchase am i able to wire the new speakers rite to the HU? witch would allow me to use less of my origional wire harness if i chose not to get a converter? swez on 01/30/2009 22:37:37 Josh, The harness kits provides all your wiring needs off the OEM Factory harness. All you need to know are the factory speaker lines colors to tap to the correct speaker locations and polarity. Some test wire with clips and a 9 volt battery are adequate for this test. Yours will look like this: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_120701720/Honda-Acura-Isuzu-Receiver-Wire-Harness.html?tp=2977 ($10.00 USD) This plugs into your factory harness and you hardwire the rest to the HU supplied harness. Here's a short .pdf file Crutchfield supplies with all HU's, amps DVD players and the like. It makes installing a breeze compared to hit and miss methods: http://akamaipix.crutchfield.com/ca/learningcenter/car/pdfs/receiver_guide.pdf Dave PS If you want to hear a funny story between my 18 year old daughter and Dad helping with her stereo problems on a 2001 Celica GT, just ask... it's a story of "Father knows Best" or "Look before Ya Leap Honey"! LOL McCallum84 on 01/30/2009 23:27:32 love to hear it knowing im not the only one gettin knees deep! the worst thing is i baught the car and previous owner installed a aftermarket HU and spliced all wires no matter what i would have to re wire a connecter. i priced a whole new radio wire harness and its 500 bucks! been looking for a smashed civic i could get one off of but hasnt been going well! McCallum84 on 01/30/2009 23:30:06 with that connecter u provided in the link not all HU comes with that plug in do i find a HU first? with that plus how do i go about putting an aftermarket HU onto it? i dont want to purchase it and end up cutting off the plus to wire it like it is now ttocs on 01/31/2009 02:02:57 If I am not mistaken, there are two wires on the hrns that need to be connected in order to keep the dome light working. I can't remember the color of if this is the exact model but I am fairly sure. Is UK still around and installing? swez on 01/31/2009 06:03:04 The HU does come with a main harness, but the conversion harness is extra. "Knee deep"? Noper, think ya need hip high waders by now. SMILE Am beginning to think you need a Pro Installer w/ wiring codes info to help ya out of this logjam. They have the right tools, skills and knowledge to get ya back on track with this or another HU model of your choice. Just explain what ya tried and that somebody was in there before you got the car. He'll know what to do in a matter of minutes. Does $50.00 sound fair to you for peace of mind and learning on his dime? (Sometimes we have to pay a few bucks for peace of mind) What say you? Swez swez on 01/31/2009 06:40:13 The story I mentioned... Daughter comes in from Chicago to visit her Dad and get away from the "noise" back home for a long weekend. She says her stereo only has one good speaker and brought the factory ones with her to swap as they were good. (Infinity Refs installed with newer HU) She's ready to rip off the door panels and swap all speakers back to stock. Okay... let's test the system to verify that 3 speakers are not working, before we perform surgery. No... Nooo...Nooo! I KNOW these are blown and let's not waste time she says with an edgey tone. Hold on thar youngin'! We test, verify results and then do what is needed, as needed! Jump in and let's have a look. (Hush up and do as I ask OK?) Alright Dad... if you insist. (Yes dear, I do) We scroll through the menus and note that fade and balance settings were changed. After 5 minutes of adjustments, all 4 speakers are working just fine and sounding like new again. I get out of the passenger's seat and go back into the garage to sip my Gatoraid and she's got this puzzled look on her face??? What the hey, we're done? Yep... easiest fix I've done in a while, but yes... we're done. Dad??? How did you know where to look and make it look so easy? I feel like such a dope! Well honey, as one gets older, we look for the easy and obvious things first. If that shows problems, we go further down the diagnotics tree to check each level. "Test and verify" in a logical way before jumping to conclusions. (Ripping your car apart) Take five, here's your gatoraid and then I'll show ya how to change oil and filter on your car. Here's a rag, the jack, a jack stand, wheel chocks and the other stuff we'll need. I supply the umph and know how, you do the work. She did a great job! (And a very happy camper again) Cute story huh? Swez PS Your Grandad didn't raise no fools. He was strick and "by-the- book" and that's how I learned many things. See what common sense can do when we take the time to apply it? Ahhh, that's my girl and oh, here are a pair of subs for later. When you are ready to install them, come back and we can do that together too. (She laughed and beamed the rest of the day) McCallum84 on 01/31/2009 14:57:33 Priceless! hahah McCallum84 on 01/31/2009 15:02:58 Something i have not mentions and it would prolly be something to consider. my 1996 honda civic came with the radio up top in the dash but the stock cd player itself is located dwn by my cup holders have forgotten bout it cause my cupholder cover is always in front of it! maybe now things mite get easier swez on 01/31/2009 19:16:07 Like most Japanese cars, the installed a 2.0 din size radio from the factory. When replaced with aftermarket systems, a trim kit is used as most aftermarkets are 1.0 din size. That leaves a nice pocket for odds & ends. Hum, those two wires you mentioned before, (Red, Red w/ Blk stripe) may be a legacy from the OEM CD player. Thought... if you like the Freeway player features and such, it really may be worth your while to have a Pro Installer look at it and clean up the job for you. With things being slow and all, he may take yours as a side job outside the shop for way less than shop rates. (Buddy rates) What's the going rate for a case of premium Canadian beer these days? That might get the job done via the barter system. Swez PS Yes, priceless was the exact word for daughter's car work. Her jaw hit the ground a few times before it broke out into a huge, thankful grin. "Gee Dad... Mom said you were up on stuff like this and would know what to do". Hehe... always make time to score point with our children when possible. They need that support as they get older. (Trust, respect and confidence in their parents) ttocs on 01/31/2009 19:26:32 I installed a radio for my neighbor two doors down in his tacoma as well as an alarm. They are a nice retired couple, he use to be in underwater demolitions in the navy(has the hearing to prove it) and generally is a gadget guy that stays fairly up to date. He stopped me a couple of days ago when I was riding wheelies infront of my house and told me that he didn't think something sounded right but being hard of hearing he wasn't sure. His sony deck took me 10 mins of playing around before I realized that you push the volume in to access the menu function and that he had done so accidentily. He was happy to be able to hear his talk radio again........ I had alot of customers that had similar situations. It was always funny to fix thier car during the pre-inspection checklist that we did on each car and be done before they were done with the paperwork. After they filled in the name info I would check what was wrong on the pre, note what I fixed and completed the post-inspection checklist(done at the same time as the pre) and give them their keys back when they ask how long it would take. swez on 01/31/2009 19:57:18 LOL, I see your point and understand the plot too. Yes, it feels good to test our skills as needed and benefit others too. Keep up the good work as it keeps us on our toes, sharp when the time comes and the satifaction of a job done well! Bless you ttocs, Swez McCallum84 on 02/1/2009 02:59:47 mt first ever installation was my 98 golf i spent weeks wondering why my amp didnt work.. come to find out i thought a remote wire was for remote control.. nvr hooked it up! bu not near as bad as my episode blowing fuses casue i already had em in before hooking pwr wire up! felt like an idiot!! since than installed hundred for myself and others no prob till now! this is the worst installation ive had with the Freeway 3"dvd HU! and my 96 honda civic. Thank god for people like you all on clubknowledge! ThankYou swez on 02/1/2009 06:13:14 Well Josh, we aim to please and if we miss, you get a wet shoe... LOL Swez ttocs on 02/1/2009 09:41:37 I too made some sparks once in one of my first installs by connecting the power wire and then running it. Some lessons you only learn once.... swez on 02/1/2009 12:35:05 I think we all start out this game in the dark and need a helping hand to keep us from doing something dumb. My first few misteps showed up on a g/f's truck when I installed her subs and amp. Installed a remote trigger line to the wrong location in the fuse panel and it somehow shorted out and popped a fuse that controlled the ECM. That shut the truck off immediately--- dead in the water. She was upset and walked back to my place from 2 blocks away and I had to troubleshoot what went wrong, fix it and work by flashlight. Found the problem, replaced the fuse and all was right with the world in maybe 20 minutes. Whew, I felt like such a dummy for that manuver and rookie mistake. Anyway, found this site back in late 1999 and wanted to learn. Ttocs was here and Mr. Brownstone too. (give or take a few months) They had the answers I needed, did a lot of homework over the next two years and learned a lot from CK folks. The hard part is keeping up with many new changes in gear, complex vehicles and all the new technology. (Bluetooth, DVD players and amplified OEM rigs can really be a trip) Still learning, Swez McCallum84 on 02/1/2009 13:19:49 its a never ending circle! always will be! always be someone that wants what the other guy got or better! makes good for those in the business, but for some of us doing it ourselves alot of trial and error... i would much rather take the chance of doing it myself with tip and advice from people like here on CK than send my car to a garage where they are gonna charge me my left nut and rite eye! im on my way to take this Freeways HU back and purchase something worth the money! Thank you all Josh... swez on 02/1/2009 14:09:28 Can't say that's not a bad idea. Out with what's not working and bring back something that has half a chance, is a good plan. As for DIY'ers, we're all for that. The hard part is we are limited to what our eyes can see and the mind comprehends. That's where a fresh set of skilled eyes and hands are most helpful. We have limits here at CK if we cannot see pics of the task at hand and then try to sort things out with others. (That's our biggest handicap) We can't look over your shoulder, see things up close and then figure it out. It seems like you've done enough of this kinda stuff to navigate around most snags. That manual is not well organized and hard to deceifer what they are saying. Oh lookie what I found... this may help a lot as you do the next install: http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/stereodetail/1049.html Factory wiring color codes for 1996 Honda Civic. HAPPY Swez ttocs on 02/1/2009 19:11:31 the hardest part of this install is just getting the radio out. The deck itself is held in place by a single screw in the back of the radio. You have to remove the hush panel below the steering wheel, and then the panel below the radio, and then you can try and stick your head in there to see the screw that holds it in. Do you have an use the factory keyless entry? McCallum84 on 02/2/2009 13:46:43 no keyless on my car. ive had the raido out and mutliple one's put in just havent been satisfied! ttocs on 02/2/2009 14:42:26 good and good. I was never a fan of hondas single screw mount in the back. Your car is actually not too bad to get to. Other cars there are no panels to remove to get to it and they must have some techs with small hands installing them......... Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
