Hey guys! The long weekend gave me a chance to putter around in the shop last week and my youngest son wanted a sub and box to go with his christmas present(2004 Saturn ion and a JVC HU) so I thought it would be a good time to do it. I have never owned great equipment, decent, not great. After plundering through some plastic bins I came across 2 MTX Road Thunder 10s,Type E 10s,Type S 12 and 5 different amps. When I found all this stuff I started thinking that maybe I wanted to put sound back in dads truck. I dont want or need serious bass. Clean at moderate volume. My son, on the other hand, wants earthquake bass on a $50 Visa gift card budget. Im going to give him the Type S and a 300 watt rms alpine amp. I already have a sealed box that I built several years ago for the Type S but want to build a ported/vented box for it. Alpine is not real specific on the actual suggested port size, length , air space etc. Suggestions? End part 1. Since I have not built a ported box before I thought I would experiment with this box -http://www.mtx.com/caraudio/products/subwoofers/TechData_RT10-04.pdf Built the box saturday morning and mounted the matching sub (MTX RT-04). Could hardly what for the glue and caulk to set to fire that baby up. With my battery charger and a battery,my sons new HU and several amps I made a test stand. I was surprised with the performance and overall spl from this box with a $50sub and a Bazooka ELA300.1. I said surprised, not impressed. I tried the Type S in the sealed box with Bazooka amp and was moderatly better. I then hooked up an Alpine MRP T-220 (140 rms @ 4ohmsx1) and the difference was incredible. Much cleaner and well balanced. One more example of you get what you pay for. Mike GRIN Replies (1) swez on 01/6/2009 03:54:50 Hey Mikey, good to see ya back at CK. Have been wondering about you since we have not chatted in a coon's age bud. Good to see ya back at CK! CLAP I see the "Lad" is gettin the bass bug and you have a lot of spare gear on hand to sort out a winner. Well, as you said... some gear will get the job done and some just won't. If the Alpine T-220 sounds that good, imagime how the M-450 would be. Swez Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
