Hey guys, My current problem is whenever I turn up my head unit it shuts down, then tries to turn on until I turn it down. Once it does this, the volume at which it shuts off at decreases until I can't listen it all. I have a ccheap sony head unit, Hifonics 1208 d amp which is 1200 watts, and a 15" L7. First I thought maybe my battery was weak but I figured if it was so weak that it couldn't turn my stereo on it wouldn't start as it good as it does or power all my lights. Then I thought maybe my alternator but it does this with the car off too. I also tested my friends new Red Top Oltima battery and same problem. Then my next guess was maybe there was a short somewhere so I ran all new power and ground wires from the head unit to the battery just to see. Same problem still. I even disconnected my amplifier, and I was able to turn it up a little louder but it shut off and then eventually wouldnt be able to turn on. Then I thought maybe it's my HU but I really dont think so, but Im gonna buy a nice alpine one tomorrow and if it doesn't work return it and get my money back. Ive talked to people at car audio stores and they said buy a new battery, but I disagree because of what I stated above. Can anybody please give me some ideas of what is wrong? Is there any chance that there is a bare wire that is shorting? I would not think it is the alt or battery myself, start simple and start checking connections. I would suspect that maybe there is a speaker wire shorting, possibly a tinsel lead on the speaker that at high volumes is shorting out. swez on 12/30/2008 01:49:03 Same thought here... speaker wiring issues or low ohmic speakers can cause this too. (2-ohm speakers) The HU power rails for internal amps cannot seem to handle the load they are getting. If you have Comps or Coax speakers with decent external crossovers, you can't just measure them normally with a DMM. Say more about your speakers connected to this HU OK? Swez raiders98 on 12/30/2008 01:51:49 All my speakers are stock, I only have the sub, but when I disconnect the amp/ sub the problem still occurs. So the only short I thought might exist was the power/ground from the headunit but i replaced those. swez on 12/30/2008 02:03:45 Nope, it the thing turns on normally and plays well until you hit 50% or higher on the volume control, it not likely to be incoming wire feeds. (Power, ground or constant seem OK) If stock speakers, and you wired the factory wires to the aftermarket conversion harness, check there first. Twisting wires to harness and electrical tape are not kosher. Crimped or soldered wiring w/ shrink tubing are the preferred methods here. Comments? Swez raiders98 on 12/30/2008 02:06:03 What if I completely disconnected all speakers except the sub and the problem occurs? Because I've tried this and it still happens. swez on 12/30/2008 02:31:07 That would tell me the HU is not working properly and needs to be replaced. If this Sony was cheap and you've had it a few years by now, upgrade to Alpine or Pioneer with features you can really use. Swez PS It's going on 3:00 AM here and I'm pulling the plug for the night. If you have other comments, leave them and we'll catch them tomorrow. Good night raider... ttocs on 12/30/2008 09:15:49 agreed that if it does it when the speakers are disconnected that it is the deck....... raiders98 on 12/30/2008 12:05:57 Alright, Im heading over to buy one today, I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the help raiders98 on 12/30/2008 23:01:42 The new head unit solved the problem :) But now I have a question about that, it is a Pioneer DEH-P6000UB and it has a usb plug in on the back that is made for ipod and when I plug my Ipod in it says check USB, I have made sure mine is compatible, do you know whats wrong, should I return it for another one? swez on 12/31/2008 01:28:44 It may be a setting in the menu system that is not correct. Read your manual carefully and if that does not help, go to the place you bought the new Pioneer HU and ask for some Tech Support. As a last resort, go to TS at the Pioneer website and see what they can tell you on this specific app. If your I-pod is compatible and on the list, it's just a matter of mating/docking them so that the new HU recognizes your I-Pod. I believe this system not only reads audio format from the I-pod, but charges the batteries as well. (Docking station interface issues) Swez Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
