tthe kicker sub would produce a good amount of spl the only problem is it needs a pretty large box...

swez on 09/24/2008 15:34:08
Agreed! The Kicker's prefer/love large ported boxes and using that large an amp will really cost you in electrical upgrades to feed it.

Consider the space you have to work with, and choose a sub/amp combo that meets the need and a tad more.

Well I was planning on building about a 5 sq foot ported box for it. the amp is rated at 1200w rms. thats too much?

swez on 09/26/2008 08:19:55
That sub is rated at 1000 watts RMS. You can get "solid bass" from a 3-6 ft^3 port-tuned enclosure.

What Hifonics amp model are you considering here? (A link would be nice)

More details on the amp would be most helpful.

hifonics BXi1208D

900rms @ 2ohm
1200 @ 1ohm

if you are getting this amp make sure you get the dual 2 ohm version of the 15 kicker L7

it will allow you to wire it parallel for a total ohmic load of 1 ohm and will allow the amp to work at its best, as well as provide the most power to feed this power hungry sub

raiders98 on 09/28/2008 06:45:36
Are all kicker l7s dual, so all I have to do is make sure it says 2ohm?

swez on 09/28/2008 07:23:14
All Kicker L7's and L5's come in 4+4 or 2+2 DVC's. To get the most from this amp, buy the 2+2 version. In parallel, you'll get a 1-ohm
load.

Part #: Kicker Solo-Baric L7 Series 08S15L72

Thanks alot guys thats what Im gonna get.

ABout the box I am building. I'm building a ported box with about 5.6 cubic ft. How big should the port be? I think 34hz is what I want?

swez on 09/30/2008 12:23:09
OK, once you have the H, W, D and board thickness dimensions will be, we can look at the proper vent size size for tuning this ported box.

FYI: The taller and wider the vent opening is, the shorter the vent port will be. (Port area VS tuning target) A tuning point between 30-36 Hz is not a bad range here. Most guys look for a "W" of 1.5 inches. The "H" and "L" of the vent will be determined by the box dimensions, tuning point of this enclosure and overall internal airspace of the enclosure used.

Have you looked at the Kicker L7 recommendations to see is they will fit for this application?

Yes I have the site says 3-6 feet for the box and mine will be about 5.4. It 19.5 "x 25"x24". Im making a round port btw

swez on 10/1/2008 22:19:36
The round port will be much easier to do and takes less space as well. Figure on using a round port of 4-6 inches in diameter to eliminate port noise.

If these are your external dimensions, (19.5 "x 25"x24") and using 3/4" MDF, the internal airspace will be 3.35 ft^3 inside the box. (Fb)
That's a nice, compact design for the L7 15".

From there, we subtract the woofer and port displacement to dial in the port tuning target. This sub displacment is 0.16 ft^3. Here's the port dimensions for 36 Hz.

4" diameter, 5.3" L
5" diameter, 9.1" L
6" diameter, 14,0" L

Thanks alot. Do you think I should go bigger in box size?

swez on 10/3/2008 09:23:07
Hard to say depending on the cabin space in your truck for the sub box.

Kicker L7's love large ported boxes and deeper and more intense low bass are possible in larger ported designs. The trick here, orient the sub/port to face upward toward the roof of your cabin. If you have more width and depth avaiable, it might be worth considering.

The dimensions given earlier are not clear as to which is Height, Depth and Width you can fit in this truck. Please clarify the max dimesions of all 3 you can actually use. Knowing those numbers, we can recalculate as needed.

I have a whole back seat Im willing to sacrifice for it. The biggest I can go for depth is 24" and the most for height is 25". About I have about 48" of width available.

swez on 10/4/2008 03:57:28
Well, you have to space to do any of the 2 recommeded choices give by Kicker's install guide: (Compact or SPL/Deep bass)

http://www.kicker.com/06/tech-support/manuals/manuals/2008/2008%20L7%20Sub%20c01%20web.pdf

This shows a slotted vent system, but you can easily use round and save time and space with the 6.0 ft^3 option.

Alright so I decided to go with the spl version with 6 ft......So my external measurements are 24" w 24" h 22" d with a port that has a 5" diameter and is 3.1408 in length....are these measuremants gonna work?

Victor on 10/4/2008 18:31:15
Dimensions of the enclosure are ok....

although

If you want a tuning of 34Hz. the length should be 3.97" = 4"

The length that you have noted will tune the enclosure at 36Hz...not a huge gap that you would notice with performance..

although it will become much easier to cut a 4" long port rather than a 3.1408" long port... just for the sake of simplicity, and you get a 34Hz tuning too.

by the way, your car will now demand a sufficient sound & vibration damping treatment.

Victor...

lol i know it will need vibration dampning
Thanks alot guys
