Newb, you have definitely lost your mind..... Dangit man, that is a big woofer!!!!

So what's your plans with this one? Shifting your guts around? GRIN

newB on 08/23/2008 04:23:27
ohhhhhhhh something like that =P

i'll have to do some serious mods to the whole back half of my car to fit this beast in there somewhere!!!!! internal trunk height is ~14" and getting 7cubes wont be a walk in the park either. to conserve valuable volume the plan is two 6" flared round ports
-Drew

swez on 08/23/2008 08:34:16
Let's take a S.W.A.G. shot in the dark and call this the RE MX series 18" sub? (SWAG = Scientific Wild-Azz Guess) LOL

Swez SMILE

newB on 08/23/2008 18:32:17
you would indeed be correct mr swez.

still no concrete plans as to fitting it in the car, but it will happen even if i have to wall it
-Drew

Victor on 08/23/2008 19:01:19
hehe.. walling that beast...

that freak weighs a tonne.... its gonna be difficult holding it vertical into the cut-out of the wall, and screwing it ..

i had hell of a time installing a CV stroker 15" .... cant imagine whats gonna happen to u...

after that experience i have decided that heavy subs go on horizontal bases.... as a thumb rule for me and my crew... or onto 45'deg diagonal boards....

i'd best say, using the wheel well in your boot as a modified enclosing space .... and a 6" or 8" projection of the entire boot surface area as an enclosure....

since ure investing pretty good into equipment.. the install will expect a balancing budget... fiberglassing can be used very effectively....

got a few ideas in mind, will share as u go ahead with the install

wish u luck with this one. Dont take this one lightly, it demands some serious planning and hardwork...

Interesting concept here newB. (Time to change your name)

How will you port this system?

Also, the woofer mounting panel should be 1.0-1.5 inches thick and use Tee nuts and 1/4" x 20 x 2" bolts. (Machine bolts with flanged tork or allen head would be a good plan) This sub is massive and needs all the hardware support you can give it.

newB on 08/26/2008 03:36:09
yup! draft shows the dual .75" baffle (possibly upgrading to two 1" boards)

I have not used Tnuts yet but i saw them at OSH and fully plan on using them to get this beast into the box. As stated in this thread, the mounting plane will be at an angle so hopefully that will help out a bit GRIN

-Drew

swez on 08/26/2008 04:41:39
We use T-Nuts on all semi-permanant woofer mounts. You can buy them at any good hardware store. They look like these:

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=081-1075

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=081-1096

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=260-778

The last one would be my pick if you buy via PE.
Swez

PS Installing T-Nuts are easy once you get the hang of setting the teeth deeply into the rear baffle board. We drill out the proper sized hole, grab a claw hammer and insert the nuts and draw up the bolt a few turns and then use the claw side of the hammer to leverage the nut into a good bite. (A sacrificial stove or hex bolt is good for this setting step)

newB on 08/26/2008 11:40:19
the last link posted is to small for my 1.5" baffle
=(

-Drew

swez on 08/26/2008 16:12:04
Think again... the threaded portion has a tophat of ~1/4-3/8". When drawn up snug, the 1.5" bolt will be a nice fit.

Even if a tad short, you can always counter-sink the T-Nut by 1/4" and have plenty of bite.

Whatever seems right in your eyes, do that.

thanks Victor!!!!

Swell job Drew!

This box is a solid effort at making a quality box for that new sub!

I see you recessed the outer lip and that is a nice touch. It sure helps with the right tools huh?

Swez

PS Did your female helper approve of the results? LOL Quality work! Keep us informed about how this sub sounds after the break-in period.

newB on 08/28/2008 10:44:42
will do!

and actually, the female does better work than i do... just in smaller doses ;-) i told her "hey i'm building tonight, feel free to stop by and get your hands dirty" and she shows up looking like that!!!

GRIN GRIN GRIN GRIN

you should have seen her after the fiberglass =O

Hehe, pad the front baffle panel and let the rear passengers have a vigorous back massage as you tool around town. Just issue hearing protection and charge $10.00 for a 30 minute session. If you get enough riders, this rig will pay for itself in a matter of months. LOL

Hope you never need the spare tire... can't imagine what a pain that would be to extricate it from the tire well and where to put the normal tire/rim until repaired?

How much weight do you think is back there now?

Swez

PS For glass work, it would be nice to get some "used" clean room garb for you and your helpers. Know any peeps that work in Class 1000 clean rooms? These "bunny suits" are light weight, tear resistant and can be used for many things. Wearing latex gloves and use tape to seal off the cuffs and you're covered from all the itchy glass particulate. They can be used many times and just use a shop vac to remove all the loose glass.

newB on 08/29/2008 16:20:38
good idea swez!! i'll start charging minimum hourly fees for bass heavy drives GRIN

i think it weighs between 70-80lbs just the box, plus another 40lbs from the woof so i'm accounting for a standard person sitting in the back seat at all times haha

The box is not finished and the two pieces can still be separated and removed. The spare tire will be moved to a vertical position right in the gap between the box and rear trunk, giving it plenty of access!!!

i'll still have storage space Left and Right of the tire (i think?)

next on my list is preparing the box for permanent assembly, bracing the sheet metal i had to cut, and making the beauty panels+covering in fabric.

then sub install and BOOOOM ness
-Drew

I've been gone and busy for too long...... good work so far.

How are the two pieces mounted together? I would have put some flat pieces a few inches thick on each side that would have made for plenty of space to make a solid seal. My only other concern would be some internal bracing to help to prevent it from flexing. If you give that thing the power it needs it will make that wood flex on the larger pieces more then you would think.

How come you decided aginst back mounting it?

newB on 09/2/2008 05:18:48
nothing against back mounting, i just think it will be way to much time/effort for the same end result. being a 40lb+ woofer and angled, i also think it will be more secure on the front.

for bracing it will get corner braces in all corners, and five runs of all thread/threaded rod. ^_^ i think it should do pretty well and solid.

hopefully more updates tonight.

Wild ... eh..!

get things in your car reinforced and a lot of damping is needed..

with that kinda vibrations....one day you'll see your car unscrewing itself ... GRIN...

Drew,

That sub rocks the house and then some. After noting all the panels vibration, (Doors, trunk a other soft seams) this car is gonna shake apart eventually.

Nice vids and great work on that sub enclosure. (Designe, fabrication and the results are sick to say the least.

Swez

PS Wear hearing protection when you test/use the system above 120dB of SPL... it will save your hearing later. ;-)

newB on 09/19/2008 12:20:14
120db?

arn't most "premium" stock setups in newer cars louder than that? GRIN

i'm hoping to Bass Race in the SPLMaxcup here in Northern California next season- at LEAST the 139.9db class, and if i strap two Elemental Designs Nine.1 amps i might be able to touch the 149.9 class (very optimistic of course) we'll see what happens when i get in the lanes.

-Drew

Victor on 09/19/2008 15:27:58
if u gonna test that system for SPL...

Please use more sound damping and some reinforcing whereever needed....

because.. flexing of the sheet metal, decreases the sound pressure inside the cabin.........

newB on 09/19/2008 18:40:36
FLEECE for the win!!!! got a 72" x 72" piece for less than 6$ so this whole project cost that plus the can of spray adhesive and a handful of staples GRIN
