Hi there
I'm a novice!
I just had a SONY stereo installed, when I truned it on I could only get to volume 5 before the speakers were crackling.
The guy said it was becuase I had a 4-way fader and the new stere was a 2-way. This means they would need to take off the dash board and disconnect the two back speakers!
Also said to make sure the front of the stereo was removed even when the ignition off because of earthing!!??
I have alsready spent £72 on installation now he wants another £100!!
Please advise.....I need advise!!!
I asked if they should have checked before installing, he said "NO" they wouldn't check to see if the car had a fader on it!
NB: It's an old Mercedes E Class.
CAN ANYONE HELP ME?

Please give us a little more information on what you had installed.

4-way fader? did you add an outside piece of equipment? It sounds to me like someon needs a 72euro kick in the ass....because that's not supposed to happen.

No outside pc of equipment.
On the Merc E series there is a slider switch on the dash board which is a 4-way fader. It's on thr dash board to switch from rear to front speakers.
They said they didn't see it and not part of the installation.
The cheapest and quickeest thing they can do it disconnect the front and rear speakers! So I would only have front speakers.Ont he SONY stereo (audio-in) there is only a 2 way fader (left or right)!!
They say they need to take the dashboard apart!
Can I send you a pic of the switch? Check the website below, you can see a little slider switch (3rd from left underneath gears)

The base AM/FM radio developed 20 watts per channel into speakers at all four corners with a console mounted fader switch. Radio features also included Dolby noise reduction, adjustable signal search levels, metal tape capacity and a visual tone display. A 100-watt, ten speaker system became available in later years, offered as an option on most models.

Interesting set of issues here and you did the right thing to ask for outside opinions before going any further.

This fader device may have been appropriate with the original factory Harman-Becker system, (2 channels only) but should not be needed at all in today's Aftermarket radio, deck or Head Unit.

In current day aftermarket HU's, we have balance and fade controls built right in the face plate control panel. Each speaker channel has its own amplifier. (4 channels in all, LF, RF, LR & RR) The outboard fader is not needed anymore.

Did you have a new aftermarket radio installed and new speakers as well? If yes, give us the model numbers so we can review the specs and make some suggestions on what to do next.
