Now have a 2001 Mustang and the audio has started to play up ,in that every now and then it will change radio stations by its self ,as well as on cd it will play about 10 secondsof a cd then shuffle to another and do the same thing again.Turning the shuffle off makes no difference. The radio though ,keeps returning to the same frequency after manually resetting to another freq. Could this possiblly be a poor connection from the ribbon cable connectors of the head to the main body or is it some thing more sinister

Hum, that is a new one to this forum. This sounds like the logic circuits that are controlled by the face plate feature buttons are acting up on this HU. Who knows why, but in complex electronic devices, a skilled tech who knows this system well, is often the cure. There are companies out there that repair/replace Factory HU's for a fee. They are not cheap and a strong google search is needed to find them.

Another option is to call around to a few local "Bone Yards" and see what's available. You'll probably have to take this one out and bring it with you to compare chassis and wire harness sockets.

Good luck,
Swez

hmm... may i ask what type of deck it is?
is it a detachable face?

if you have steering wheel controls...that would be my 1st guess. Those systems were quite problematic even when they came out.

I'd consider replacement...but if you have one of those extended warranties, see if it's covered. The problem may be as simple as a wiring harness coming in & out of contact or problems with the steering wheel connection.

For markz No it is not a detachable face and the deck is a 6 stacker cd and is part of the whole chassis unit.
For Mr Brownstone No it has no steering wheel controls ,
As for replacement ,these Mustangs are thin on the ground here in Australia and as such the local bone yards are not an option .So i guess i will pull it and try cleaning the ribbon connectors on the face panel and applying some Stabilant 22 on the pins, unlessanyone has any further ideas?

It's worth a shot and about the only real option other than going to an aftermarket HU install. Here in the US, we have a common product called WD-40. It's a cleaning and lubrication spray product used for many common purposes.

Stabilant 22 does a similar thing, (Cleans and provides good electrical conduction to electronic connections) you might get good results if that is the problem. Use a small toothbrush if possible when cleaning the contacts. It looks like SBT-22 is an IPA-based cleaner and will not harm delicate electrical contacts.

Good luck mate,
Swez
