OT: Computer file storage options?

by swez
  Prev :: Next
Having some glitches in my old lap top this week. Am wondering if there is a way to store key files, docs and music for a short time and just wipe the HD clean and start over fresh. (XP Pro)

Once the system is stable and such, I'd just go back to the online storage system and reload. I don't have the extra cash to buy a backup drive right now and wondered if any here have tried online file storage? (10 gig at most)

Comments/suggestions?

I bought a small external usb hard drive when I bought my laptop. I say small but it was actually 180Gb but it was the smallest I could find at the time. I think it was around $70 at the time but it came with a program that allowed me to back up EVERYTHING on my hard drive, and also secures it with a password. If my laptop were to break tomorrow, I could get a new one and have everything loaded on it in a few hours operating exactly the same as my old one.

I hear ya on that and have considered doing somthing similar. However, I "think" this computer has been hijacked and the main OS has been compromised.

The thought is to save my personal files, music and other key programs. After that, reformat the drive and start fresh. This is a real PITA to do, but after all the effort, things should get stable and work just fine again.

Here's a general overview i am experiencing:

1. Turn the computer on and it boots very slowly
2. Get on the web and do some surfing, e-mails and come here too
3. With out any real warning, this computer gets quirky
4. The cooling fan come on and stays on
5. I look at the Task Manager and see the CPU is working at 90-100% and all surfing or audio/video features get disrupted to a point it no longer worth the aggrivation

So, I turn it off, let things settle down and cold boot again. Most of the time, that seems to work. If I do a warm boot, (Restart) the problems mentioned are still there. If I walk away to do something and come back later, the CPU fan is on w/o any known programs running, but the CPU usage is right up the scale and my RAM is almost full.

Am not a cumputer geek, but it seems that this computer is being controlled by others. If I had to guess, they planted well hidden command codes that detects when the computer is on and connected to the net. When they search for resources, the commands activate and render my computer as a bot or zombie.

Any helpful comments and suggestions are very appreciated,
Swez

PS I don't have a lot of cash to toss at this problem right now. My previous job has shut down for the season and am living off my savings while looking for other work. Thank goodness I saved well when working, but there is no unemployment benefits available to 1099 contractors and the next job cycle won't start until September. So, I have to be very frugal for now. Welcome to 2008!

I would start simple and do a disk clean and a defrag.

check to see which processes are running when this happens. I had a previous pc that got something and I identified it by looking at the processes.

In all reality, I hate computers which is funny if you remember where I work....

hi,how is everyone?good i hope!
had a bit of problems compwise myself .so its been a while since i have been on.
anywho if you feel you have been hijacked/invaded/hacked , online storage is probably not the best choice as it would be vulnerable as well.
as far as storage i found a pretty good deal on e-bay as far as an external drive, the route i chose before i did a system recovery.
if that puts you out ,consider a zip file compression program(freeware) and burning to dvd> more space.
you wont need to save your os and you get 4.7 gb per disc , not bad if you get a good compression ratio.and remember sd cards and thumb drives unused are space to be filled if need be.
as far as the $ climate, i think we all feel the crunch of the upcoming election year,(my theory on why all is so slow and painful) and my prayers are for all of us to pull through.
God bless us all.

ttocs...

Yep, ran defag and D/C too. This is probably an embedded software issue or hijack. There are 33 processes showing in the Task Manager, but most of them are idle or low % readings.

Lou... good to see ya back at CK. I don't have a burner in this machine. The next one will though. As for thumb drive or portable external HD, that may be the best option.

As for your comments on the economy sliding every major election year, I would tend to agree. After 30+ years as a voter, I note similar trends from the past. This recession is real for a lot of folks and some "experts" (Man in a suit w/ a briefcase from out of town = Expert) say this could get deeper and last well into 2009?

Well, why not... we've been spending over $180 billion a year in Iraq for over 5 years. God bless our men and women that are serving over there, but may God judge those who plunder the American taxpayers for thier own gain.

Happy 4th to all!!!!!!!!!!FLAG
hey Swez, good morn.just thought i would send you the link of the compresser that i use with good result, it does'nt take up much space and works pretty quickly.http://uberdownloads.com/7-zipe.html
kinda funny,in a sad way,as a youngster i was thrown into the punk /anarchist/anti-establishment,group well thrown is a bad word, chose to join, now i am not saying everything thrown around in the group was right but even then i felt it was just rebellion and there was a true greater good that i would open my eyes to as i matured .now more than ever i beleive there is a need for reform to the route that is being taken by the" man". dont get me wrong, i love this country but the government sucks and scares the heck outa me.more and more it is self serveing and the noose is shrinking on our freedoms daily, making it hard to beleive that this is for the "greater good".being a father its not really me i worry for but my kids that i feel sorry for, they will and are coming into a world that is becoming more and more enclosed and they have no idea of the freedoms i took for granted as a young boy. it seems for our own safety nature is being placed off limits as we encroach it with our constant need to build our own edifaces smack in the middle of our shrinking natural resources.more and more rivers lakes stream and such are being closed off , only being opened at the purchase of a ticket and more and more nature is finding its way into our established suburban gated comunities "threatening" "our" safety. wow , what hypocricy.
now i know there are two sides to every story and the truth lies dying in the middle, i try to keep an open mind but if wee keep shoving our fist down natures throat...well .. as it seems , it might just bite.
as for the presidential(puppetdential, frank ozz rolling in his grave) race , it seems to almost be an experiment to test the climate, first put out a racially challenging candidate then go to the opposite and then give a woman a shot , come on we have come a long way but apparently not that far baby,(not that that is the best choice) then let the veteran slip in quietly as a shark just beyond the media breakers.now mark these words, and dont kill the messanger , no matter who is elected( as if we really elect anyone at all)there will be no change whatsoever from present conditions, our freedoms will be compressed more and more for "our" safety and we will eat it up like cops on donuts, yup got a problem w/ authority, just how much would be saved if we got off our as*s and took the responsibility of protecting ourselves,ya there are morons out there but education does wonders. as a race we are suicidally content to be led to our own slaughter. seen Animal Farm?check it out not too bad for a cartoon, good book too written by george orwell.it is said the best place to restart is the beginning how impossible that is portrayed while we vaugely search for miracle cures for what we have brought upon ourselves.
the best intentions pave the road to hell.
well sorry bout that , its been a while as i said , i guess i had to get it out.
god bless us all.
...end transmission..

Have you been reading my e-mails and private journal notes lately?

Have been thinking many of the same thoughts as you mentioned and for the most part, our leaders in DC, the greed barons on Wall Street and the Federal Reserve are the real problems. I also agree that when the next President steps in, there is likely to be very little real change. Congress is so steeped in their own little turf wars, nothing gets done and all they do is talk, but little action comes out of the mess. If enough citizens get fed up enough, who knows what change is possible?

Yes, Paul Harvey has it right:

THIS GUY SURE HAS A GOOD VIEW OF WHAT'S HAPPENING TO THIS COUNTRY PAUL HARVEY'S ON- AIR PRAYER

'Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self esteem. We have abused power and called it politics. We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and Set us free. Amen!'

I think that sums things up pretty well huh?

well i hate to be mean but we (i include myself) are too stupid to do anything about it.i mean imagine if by some miracle we came together (private citizens) and chose just one company to buy our fuel from , how long before we had them fighting for our business.of course that issue on a whole is backpedaling as we enter the era of superstorms and slowly our beleif that everything is gonna be allright, is infected with the truth that perhaps there is something to the scientific findings that have been published for years about our impact on the enviroment.
pointing the finger doesnt fix the crack in the pot.
for all our advances as a culture we still havent found a way to cull our self destructive gene.we can hug and stab in the same motion, what is the answer?dunno.
it is good to know i do not sit alone in my thoughts tho.
well i am off to drive my hummer to the dump to get rid of some old batteries and barrels of toxic waste then go 4 wheelin on a mountain of discarded electronics.

Ahh, a good sense of humor and some sarcasim on the side please and make that a double chocolet shake too...

I don't think we are so much stupid as complacent. It's easy to get into a rut, get used to a given set rituals or whatever and just sit back, point fingers and beech about stuff. (We're all prone/guilty to these things to one degree or another)

Well, being aware there is a problem is a big step in itself. Figuring out how to tackle it is another step in the right direction. Then measuring the results as we go, will tell if one is making progress or not.

There are no quick fixes in all of this, but when our country was new and struggling, bright minds banded together and wrote our Constitution. They could not see everything in the future, but they knew the evil in the hearts of others and tried to establish a road map for freedom for all. It almost worked for 200 years.

For now, the best we can do is keep our families and friends safe and watch out for others too. That builds community and expands it. Given enough time, this can spread and catch on mostly when calamity strikes. I'd say we're seeing a fair share of calamities these days.

The whole country changed on 911. Ordinary people became heros and people from all over the country came to help out in the rescue effort and set up relief sites for those who needed it. We had unity and community then and it's still there, but went dormant in time. Will it take another event of that magnitude to wake us up again? (I pray that does not happen)

Anyway, that and $1.50 will get us a hot cup of COFFEE. But the good part is, we have the right to speak our minds. The bigger question is... "Who is listening"?
