Subwoofer and Monoblock Amp connections

Hi,
I recently purchased the following:

JVC mobile in-dash head unit (AVX-800)

12" JVC Arsenal Subwoofer (CS-AW8240)

Kenwood Monoblock Class D Amplifier ( KAC - 9152 D)ftp://inform.kenwoodusa.com/MANUALS/KAC9152d.pdf

Since the Subwoofer has an RMS of 1000 Watts, I want to run the Amp at 2ohms so that it will deliver 900 Watts. The woofer is a Dual coil woofer.

Please help me with the connections between the subwoofer(dual coil) and the amplifier so as to get out the best performance from both of them. Your help in adjusting the settings on the amplifier will be much appreciated.

My main problems are:
1. Do I connect the two coils of the sub in (parallel / series / use only one coil) to get the best out of it ?

2. The amp has two inputs ( L & R ) but my head unit has only one RCA output for subwoofer. How do I connect?

3. The amp has 2 sets of speaker terminals. The amp is NOT bridgeable. So where do I take the output from? (One set of Speaket Terminals / Bridge both as I have only one subwoofer.

Please help me with the controls on the Amplifier also. Thanks in advance.

This seems like a nice little package. This sub is a Dual coil, 4+4 version. When both coils are connected in parallel, the amp sees a 2 ohm load.

1. Here's a wiring guide for your sub: (Both coils are wired in parallel and you get a net 2 ohm load to the amp)

http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/S-UR13ubZsFTg/reviews/20040427/subs_amps_guide.html?page=3

2. Since the HU has a single RCA output jack for the sub channel, a simple Y splitter patch cord is needed. It will have 1 female RCA that splits to 2 male RCA's. It's that simple. They look like this:

http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?g=20114&i=04318003&search=RCA+patch+cables&tp=1934

3. This amp has 2 + and 2 - terminals for ease of wiring up 2 subs. In your case, the + wire on the sub will go to one of the + terminals on the amp. The - wire will go to the - terminal on the amp. (See page 4 of your manual for the details)

4. As for setting up the controls under the cover, start with this initial setup and adjust as needed for best results.

a. The LPF setting range can be set between 70-100 Hz. (We normally suggest 80 Hz as the starting place)

b. The phase switch should be set to Zero for now.

c. The ISF is set to off for sealed enclosures. If you have a ported box, use the 25 Hz setting.

d. The gain control is generally set to the center initially. (1.5 -2.0 volts) Depending on the actual HU output voltage, the gain can be adjusted for more or less bass output. (5 will be the quietest while 1 or less may overdrive the amp into heavy clipping and is not good for the sub) Be careful with this adjustment or you can damage the sub.

Note: If you have an AC volt meter on hand, the maximum voltage for 900 watts would read 42.4 volts AC. This reading is taken right off the amp output lugs with the sub connected and the HU set to ~80% of max volume.

Got all that?

Another Indian on board...

Welcome to CK....!

hows everyone else ? been a long time since i've visited CK.. too held up with new projects on hand.....

Rahul, that sounds to be a decent set-up although I got my own reservations on JVC products.

That kenwood amp is a trusted performer, you'll be happy with it. The sub has pretty low sensitivity for a 1000wrms sub, you'll be happier with a ported enclosure if you like it booming.

That would be the wiring diagram

Swez has mentioned some very useful tips to fine tune your system, try to follow and you'll be a happy boomer.

Victor...

Hi Victor! Nice to have you back for a visit. Like you, have not had much time for CK stuff of late as this job I landed back in September, keeps me hopping and very busy. (Too much so of late)

This gig winds down in mid-June and restarts again in September. I hope to find a better gig before that, but have a solid place on this team if I wish to return in the fall. The work is very demanding, pay is below par and very long hours too. But, it brings in the cash for now.

My teenage daughter may be coming out from Chicago to visit for a week at the end of June. We have not seen each other in over 5 years and much has changed since than. To say the least, my hands will be full if she makes the trip. She's a real handful right now and Mom cannot handle her well anymore. Have some reservations about this one, but will welcome her with open arms, plan some fun activities and see how things go.

Anyway, I have to get ready for work now. God bless U my brother and we'll catch up sooner or later on YIM OK?
