can anyone tell me the location of the factory amp in a 2000 pontiac firebird with monsoon amp....i cant find it anywhere...i have the 8 speaker monsoon system....i want to add an 8" woofer to the mix. GRIN sry i dont know where the factory amps is. COFFEE -Drew SQLThump on 05/17/2008 15:03:10 Yup, totally hula hoops and loud record players......... I haven't been posting much because of a major lack of interest in the projects readers have been posting lately, and have too much going between customer cars and my Dr. appointment to work on my rig very much. Plus, missing 3 of your fingers for typing really puts salt in mt game....having a busted ass hand sucks. No idea where your factory amp is, but why so simple? F-bodies can have some of the coolest stuff done to those craz shaped hatches, and the acoustics in them is dreamy........ swez on 05/17/2008 18:28:24 After being on this and a few other sites for almost a decade, there's a pattern of slow activity from May til late August. Guys are out of school, doing other things and just enjoying the summer. Others are working and if they live in hot areas, it's no fun sweating up a storm, working on a car audio projects while working too. So, it's down time and maybe a time to save money and plan for the next project before school starts up or work slows down and they get a vacation break. Like the others, I have no idea where the Monsoon amps are located on this car. Ttocs, UK Installer or Kittle would probably know the answer to this one, but they are on vacation too. (hehe) It seems to me, you should be able to tap off the rear door speakers, (6-3/4" speakers) for the audio signal and then use an attenuator circuit to knock down the voltage enough to power a powered sub enclosure of your choice. (Infinity Bass Link, Bazzoka or similar products) The trick here is to determine the output voltage the speakers are getting from the Monsoon amps when they are pushing out some serious power. Knowing that voltage will help determine how much attenuation is needed for the amp you choose to power the sub kit. Comments? Swez ttocs on 05/17/2008 22:15:04 I cruised through and saw it but I am not sure where they are to respond. I would recommend checking out an F-body forum and see if there is an audio section that knows the monsoon system the way I know mustang/mach systems. I have not been on here much as I have been checking out job listings, and investigating a possible business opportunity that popped up last week. busy busy busy...... trunkisloud on 05/19/2008 07:59:13 heres what i did...instead of locating the amp...i removed the rear sailpanel subs and ran the wires from there to the rear to a kicker 10" cvr...its underpowerd for sure at high volume plus its in a pre fab truck enclosure....but its good for now...the reason i wanna go with the 8" in the rear side compartment is so that i will have less weight since i have been doin a few upgrades to the motor and hittin the track...plus i cant use the cargo area in the hatch because thats where the t-tops are stored when removed....im not sure how safe this is for the factory amp.... Ash on 05/20/2008 01:57:39 No doubt the stock amp will be limited on power, but have you tested the stock sub's ohm load? This could help point you in the right direction in maintaining the amps durability. Although going up in ohm load isn't necessarily bad if the sensitivity will be better. You'd be surprised in the difference in output just by gaining 3db. Scaling down isn't a bad idea as gas prices rise. Even though you are racing, it is a good trend for the street as well. I was going to do an SPL rig and actually had started it. Now that gas has gone ridiculously up there, weight is the last thing I want to add. I won't sacrifice my sounds, but any means of gas efficiency is major right now. Imagine what the weight of some major installs containing massive amounts of wood is doing to the car's original mpg..... UKinstaller on 05/22/2008 04:48:49 the amp is mounted behind the spare tire on the passenger side quarter panel. however, if memory serves correct, the rear speakers acted as woofers in those systems, so all you would have to do is tap a line-out converter at one of the rear speakers. the speaker will probably have four wires, don't know the colors, just mix and match until it sounds good. -UK trunkisloud on 05/22/2008 14:21:51 yea i tapped into the sail panel subs...the rear speakers are another set of factory comps...the subs were 2 ohms and my kicker is a 2ohm dvc....so i ran leads from each side to each coil...it sounds ok but you know how factory radios reduce bass levels at high volume....its a temp fix til i get all the right goodies.
