-Has anybody heard of the quality of sundown saz 1500d and how is it in relation to the Diamond D6 1200? -Which one is a better purchase (pound for pound)? - I am powering two JL 13w6's - Other than e-bay where else can i find used car audio for sale? Replies (15) ttocs on 05/4/2008 15:07:28 sundown? that would be a new one for me. I am running diamond amps and componants and love em..... Ash on 05/4/2008 21:08:37 Both amps seem to be strong and accurate in output with related fusing. However, the Sundown catches my attention as it has a subsonic filter that all sub amps could use. This brings capabilities up a notch from the Diamond. I also checked out the manual for the Sundown and it's specs are a bit more thorough in it's ratings which is a good thing. When you spend that kind of money you kinda want to know what you actually have. Is it cleaner? I doubt you will hear the difference for they are fairly close in distortion rates. Distortion in bass is more tolerable than the upper register so the numbers don't really represent much. The sub & box combo will have to be accounted for. But I do find the Sundown probably to be more accurate in it's paperwork as it is listed to do .1% @ 4 ohms while the Diamond lists .2% at an unstated ohm load. We know that once the ohm load is brought down lower, the distortion rate will increase, but by how much? Neither amp tells this.... For that kind of money I would like to know distortion rates @ all ohm loads for comparative reasons. Is it better than the Diamond? Probably not, even though it offers more power. With the JL's rating of 750 rms each, both amps are well in range with the Diamond being only 150 shy each. Shouldn't matter a whole lot as long as you are in the upper tier of the sub's power range. The Sundown seems to be able to give the full power. What's to be understood is that running any amp hard at it's lowest ohm load will shorten it's life somewhat and being 1 ohm stable doesn't make it bullet proof. However, having more power output available so the amp doesn't have to run harder to bring the subs to their limit does help. Given the same price I would probably go for the Sundown, but I could be wrong...... swez on 05/5/2008 17:45:39 We all know Diamond makes a great product. But that does not mean other quality brands will fall short when used as designed. I would tend to agree with Ash on several statements. He reseached both options and no product is bullet proof, but some do a better job than others when abused. As for distortion ratings, few average guys will balk at <2.0% distortion at full power. (Especially for the bass engine) One might see it on an O-Scope, but the ears are not that precise. Excess distortion is most evident in the Mids/Highs. But at high SPL/dB levels, all bets are off as the ears go into protect mode and try attenuate incoming noise, sound whatever. After we reach that threshold, (~120 dB of SPL) auditory acquity goes right out the window in a matter of minutes. Swez newB on 05/8/2008 18:34:23 i would opt for the sundown- Ash's post says it all but ive seen the 1500 sundowns do something like .357 ohms DAILY (although im sure there was some degree of imp rise) Sundownz (the owner, forget his name) posted on his thread when he caught all his fuses on fire and directed him as to where to pick up stronger fuses that will work without catching on fire (thats what i call confidence in your product) ^_^ -Drew flynn on 05/8/2008 23:15:24 flynn on 05/8/2008 23:18:49 -Right on, Thanks guys, you're advice is appreciated! i'm in the works of purchasing a sundown as we speak! -The owners name is Jacob i believe newB SQLThump on 05/9/2008 17:04:20 Right on man, glad to see your rig coming together! Drew, did the fuses catch fire because there was so much temp going through it burnt the plastic without blowing the fuses or something? Thats some crazy stuff! newB on 05/9/2008 22:02:55 http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/index.php?showtopic=20192&st=0&start=0 ^_^ GRIN -Drew swez on 05/9/2008 23:41:33 Was reading post and threads that newB linked above and just have to chuckle after a while of reading. Some of these guys seem to know "something", but a few are pretty rough around the edges and lose the profanity. One thing seems to be missing on their math about the subs ohmic load structure. Reading the net ohmic load with a DMM is not the correct way to calculate actual impedance. (That's a DC number to a static coil) Since speakers and subs change impedance with frequency considerably, one needs to calculate actual Impedance while monitoring Voltage/Current coming out of the amp, to the load. Swez PS This guy is an idiot... flames 8 fuses and does not change his habits? "Stupid is as stupid does" !!! (Forrest Gump) flynn on 05/10/2008 04:07:25 Fire or no fire still a solid amp at 1 ohm from what i gather, correct ? flynn on 05/10/2008 04:11:13 swez- i definitely agree ....... Run Forrest run!!!!!!!!!!!! newB on 05/10/2008 04:30:54 right- point was not to illustrate their brains but rather that the amp is surviving such torture. I agree 100% swez GRIN -Drew Ash on 05/10/2008 09:56:38 That definitely was a test of durability and proves that amp to be worthy! What I don't understand is why on earth would anyone that even claims to take care of their gear go below the rated ohm load. Of course it may be able do it, but that would be to insure that the amp won't burn up at the rated loads. I would hope that all companies design like that. However, going beyond that is pointless, voids warranties, and is absolutely dangerous. Perhaps some of those guys need to visit here and learn a thing or two! LOL swez on 05/10/2008 16:25:36 Judging from some posts and replies, I'd rather not have many of them here at CK. We have a great site and re-training others is difficult once bad habits are well formed. Also, we refrain users from abusing their gear. I can see a guy flaming one set of fuses by mistake, but to do it twice and then say he knows what he is doing... "Run Forrest Run" !!! Given enough time, he'll burn that Escalade to the ground. On a positive note, these Sundown amps seem to be very well built to take the abuse noted. Swez COFFEE !!! newB on 05/10/2008 18:03:54 yeah both sites are completely different lol SMD has a very "hometown" feel because meade lives an hour up the road and most the mods and admin for the site, plus a good percentage of the members are "local" (being within a few hours of me) when there is a local comp we all refer to each other by our SMD name GRIN -Drew (PS swez i like the "!!!" after your COFFEE HAHA) Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
